How to Save Money at Skylos Sports Medicine - Frederick
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My puppy broke his leg on a Saturday in March. Skylos was able to get him in for surgery that following Tuesday. Dr. Kennedy explained everything thoroughly and did such an amazing job reconstructing his little leg. Fast forward to today, he had his 6 week checkup and is healing wonderfully. I can’t thank Dr. Kennedy and Skylos enough for how well they took care of him. Sarah for everything post op and Rebecca, Deanna and Karen for answering all of my questions. They even sent a picture of him in recovery watching Peppa Pig on an iPad (he’s very needy). Worth every trip to and from Pittsburgh!

Our overall experience with Skylos Sports was incredible. I searched various places for a second opinion on our Rottweiler who had been experiencing mobility issues. After submitting the online request, they were quick to contact me via phone to discuss additional details & was very knowledgeable. I remained in communication with them while on the waitlist & was able to come in sooner than expected due to cancellations. Upon arrival, the staff were very welcoming & we did not wait very long to see Dr. Kennedy. He did a thorough examination on our dog & provided a recommendation based on his findings. Although we do not need to continue with their specialists, I felt very confident in the information I was provided on what we needed to do moving forward.

Talk about professionals! Our dog had a very intrusive knee surgery. The staff was wonderful. They know what they are doing. They give you a lot of information before the procedure so you know what you are in for. Then when it is over they walk you through what they found and did (with pictures). They are very clear on the next steps and recovery needs. It has been a pleasure working with them and Fiona would thank them if she could talk.

In addition to the highly skilled surgeons at Skylos Sports Medicine, the outstanding physical rehabilitation services make this the best veterinary orthopedic practice in the DC Metro area. My much-loved mixed Shepherd – Milo - was born with congenitally deformed elbows. In 2015, at 2 years of age, he started having difficulty walking. A classmate, who at the time was head of orthopedic surgery at the Virginia-Maryland Regional School of Veterinary Medicine, recommended that I take him to see Dr. Peter Lotsikas for corrective surgery. The surgery was successful, and Milo had 8 years of a fun active life hiking, backpacking, and playing. In October 2023, however, Milo developed painful tendinitis in his shoulders to compensate for the progressive arthritis in his elbows, and became so severely lame we had to carry him outside in a sling. Back at Skylos, Milo has been receiving physical therapy from Drew Johnson and is now able to do short trail walks and resume his ‘job’ of finding sticks in the woods. In addition to expertise in canine biomechanics and physical therapy, Drew has a gentle, patient approach and is able to read the very subtle signs of canine body language to guide what he does during treatment sessions. Milo - usually a fearful dog - is actually happy to go see Drew. As a veterinarian and pet-owner I am extremely grateful for the first-rate care Milo has received at Skylos, which has given him two leases on a high-quality pain-free life.

Both of our dogs have had surgery at Skylos. They are very kind and great at teaching what to expect before and after surgery. They are quick to respond to any concerns we had during and after hours. They provided care for our dogs within days of when we had our consults. We cannot say enough good things about the entire staff.
