How to Save Money at Prospect Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Hawley has been amazing to my dog Pink and I. His approaches on my pups infection were amazing and it very quickly got better. He is also very considerate of the financial strain vet bills can be. He gave me options so I didn't feel pressured to choose the most expensive one and while I did it is nice to know that he wanted to give me the option instead of just presenting me with a big bill. We drive over an hour to come see him and he will also be seeing my other pets from now on too. You can tell her really treats your pets like they are his own. Can't say enough kind things.

My son took his 1 1/2 year old cat to have him neutered yesterday, all went well with blood work, Loki seemed healthy. My son received a call the surgery went well, when he went to pick him up he was told the cat passed away. What happened???? We don’t understand!! My son is totally devastated. His first personal owned fur baby. Is this normal? I would hate to think it was negligence on the staffs part. Has this ever happened to anyone?

Dr. Hawley & his team are nothing but the best! They provide excellent patient care from day one to day done, and want the best health for your pet every day in between. The local humane society recommended Prospect to me because they offered the most affordable services, but their value goes way beyond what they save in your wallet. Reception is always warm & welcoming, the techs love your pets just as much as you, and Dr. Hawley goes above & beyond his duty as a vet to make sure your loved one gets the best care possible. Although I will not be back to visit them because they recently performed a beautiful end of life service for my dog, I highly recommend them for anyone who wants to have many healthy years with their pet.

I took my dog there because I had a coupon and they barely even looked at barely touched her. Told us she had a heart mummur and she would be fine it's not affecting her. She was a senior dog and they made us put her down to clean her teeth they said it was dire or she wouldn't make it. So we did the teeth cleaning and a couple weeks later they calling saying she needed another surgery. After the first surgery it was to much for her. Calling asking when were gonna pay. They had no consideration for us. She passed away the same day they called asking for me to pay which I already did with care credit. When I brought her in after she passed they took her from me and I didn't get to see her one last time. They just told me they was giving her a ex ray and I could say my goodbyes. I never saw her again. They never gave me her paw print. Then had the nerve two weeks after she passed and was picking up her ashes they asked how was i gonna pay for it. I used care credit. The doctor didn't care bout my dog. Oh I can't forget when we had the check up the doctor told me my dog was perfectly healthy how is that possible when she died less than a month after I saw them. My dogs paws shouldn't look like that after she had her teeth Cleaned! I don't recommend this place.

I was dog sitting for a friend who is a patient at Prospect Vet-the dog got sick and I took him in for evaluation. The saw us quickly and the vet tech (very professional young man) was wonderful with the dog and comforting. The vet was informative and helpful. They are lucky to have this vet tech and although we have another regular vet-I would not hesitate to use this office.
