How to Save Money at Dunloggin Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This amazing, majority female veterinary hospital runs like a well oiled machine. They are super knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. When I moved to Catonsville last year, finding a top rated vet office for my Australian Cattle Dog was a top priority and I'm so happy I found Dunloggin when I did. Despite their parking lot being on the small side, I've never had any trouble finding a parking space because the staff all park behind the building in an even smaller parking area. This is the first evidence of Dunloggin putting their patients' human friends at the front of the line. The office is small and the hallway could easily become a point of high anxiety for you and your pet. But the staff does their best to coordinate the movement of people and pets to ensure there aren't any high stress incidents for anyone. Take your precious pet to this animal hospital. You won't regret it.

I can't praise this veterinary practice enough. 7.5 years ago we moved from Arlington, VA and needed a new vet for our 1.5 year old puppy. Dunloggin was recommended by our neighbor and over the years this practice has proven their excellence and dedication to veterinary care time and time again. All of their doctors and staff have been extremely patient and caring, despite my dogs extensive allergies and medical needs. One example of this is 5 years ago, when our dog was in a traumatic accident needing daily doctor visits for weeks, and a surgery. The amount of specialized care and sensitivity they gave to us and our pup at that specific time was well above and beyond. We will never ever forget how professional, patient and wonderful they were at handling the difficult situation and our dog's recovery. We can't thank them enough for all the years of care they've provided for our furbaby. Thank you Dunloggin, for your steller business and outstanding patient care! You definitely raise the bar for other veterinary practices. It's only fitting on our pups 9th birthday, we write this review and thank those who were key in keeping him so healthy and happy all these years. ❤️ 🐶🐾

I have been taking my pibble here for years and I love the care that I receive everytime. Every vet and vet tech has been very knowledgeable and empathetic. Prices are reasonable especially for Howard county.

This is the 3rd time in the past 2 years that my pup needed a sick visit and we couldn’t get her in anywhere. She wasn’t sick enough for an ER but she was too sick to just be left without a visit. We left Dunloggin during COVID and went to Banfield (just to have in room visits since my dog is anxious). Dunloggin got her in the same day I called and thank goodness. Dr Shobe was so kind and sensitive to her complex history of GI issues. I could not have asked for a more thorough and thoughtful provider for her. We went with a conservative approach and Dr Shobe walked through all potential causes for her symptoms. I know she is a relief vet but sign her up as my dog’s primary care! Thank you Dunloggin for relieving the stress of a difficult time by getting her in and thank you Dr Shobe for your help!

For all of the years of the existence of the practice and many, many dogs I have relied on the faithul expertise of the vets at Dunloggin. My greyhound, Sandy just received an excellent overall health report following the exam given by Dr. Laura Holland, my vet of many years.
