How to Save Money at LaVale Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I always appreciate the quality care my pet receives at this vet and have had good experiences there. However, my pet is on a prescription thyroid food that I used to be able to buy on Chewy but now this vet has their own place you have to order from. I pay $250 for 6 months of both dry and canned food at a time to save on shipping. Chewy always had next day delivery. Like the food would be at my house the day after I ordered it. It's taking over a week to get only PART of my order with this new service and there's still no updates on whether or not the other items will ship and my pet needs her food. Terrible service. Enough so that I'm considering finding a new vet where it's easier to purchase my pet's prescription food. I don't want to deal with this type of hassle every time I need to purchase a refill. They force you to buy from their service and then don't have the items to ship. But they had no problem taking the full amount for the order out of my account despite not shipping the items. If the items don't ship, will I get a refund or will that be a hassle too?

Every single person who works at LaVale Veterinary Hospital was so kind to both of my pups (and me as well). The doctor was spot on in his diagnosis and gave me great advice. The techs made my dogs feel at ease and took the time to answer my questions and listen to my concerns. The front office staff were so lovely and helpful. They went out of their way to make everything easier for me. I could not have asked for a better visit.

Got us in quickly when our ornrey cat hurt his eye. Always nice and responsive support staff, and great vets. We moved to this area to retire. We have found this is the best vet clinic we ever have taken our furry family to for their well-being.

I have NEVER been late with a bill, paid in full each time. I had 2 dogs with this company. The vets are exceptionally caring and was always professional. We had to put our first dog down and they were very caring. Sent me a bill for $35, which was paid as soon as I received it in the mail. I just recently had to put our 2nd dog down and they charged an arm and a leg for what they did. My dog was already half gone and they charged over $190.00! Now mind you, he might’ve weighed 15 lbs and the first one weighed around 80 lbs at the time. What I’m REALLY upset and disgusted by was that while me and my husband are grieving in the room after they took our dog out, the secretary comes in and wants paid! What kind of business is this? I’ve never been so appalled and upset about how they wanted paid on the spot while we are crying and comforting one another. I won’t ever be back.

Lavale Veterinary Hospital has always been honest and caring. Answering any and all questions I have. My ESA, Angel a 12 year old Shih Tzu, is treated like the baby she is. The staff, doctors, technicians are amazing at their jobs and the most caring people. I recommend Lavale Veterinary Hospital to anyone who has pets and looking for a place to take their pets that is both compassionate and clean.🙂
