How to Save Money at Schulmeyer Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Schulmeyer is such an amazing Veterinarian. I appreciate his kindness from him and his staff more than they know. The girls at the front desk are always on their game, especially Brynn, she's amazing! Thank you all for taking such great care of my sweet Pearl in her final days ❤️ RIP to my baby girl

Fantastic Veterinarian services here. When I moved to the Perry Hall area, I was happy to find this location to have my black Labrador checked on for all the routine, check ups and vaccinations. Professional, courteous, nice staff. Thank you so much for all the services! Keep it up.

From the beginning to his last breath, Dr. Schulmeyer took care of our beloved dog Bear. He helped us taking care of him while he was sick and had a hard battle with managing his diabetes up until his final days. He is the best vet around, and we are forever thankful for his help. One day again, we look forward to bringing a new fur member. But, for now, thank you, everyone there, for your help ❤️

I would give 0 stars, if this were an option. This practice lacks compassion. I had been taking my animals here for about 2 years. No problems during this time. I have had countless number of pets in my lifetime, and have had to euthanize most of them, at some point. One of my cats became very sick, a few years ago. Dr. Schulmeyer treated him with medication for months. Then the medication stopped working. So when I made the decision to end his suffering, it came with a heavy heart. I made the appointment. As I was driving to the office, with Baxter in his carrier on the front seat, he looked at me with implicit love and trust. We walked into Schulmeyer Animal Hospital. They took us into the back. As soon as I set the carrier down, 4 staff members grabbed Baxter and pinned him to the exam table. I was told that I could not touch him. At this point, I was in shock thinking, " What is happening here?" Every other vet that I had dealt with in the past, had encouraged me to hold and comfort my animal during this process. Not at Schulmeyer Animal Hospital. My poor cat had to have been so scared, in his last moments. I never got to say goodbye, as I couldn't touch or get close to him. I am still traumatized, and feel so guilty for allowing my sweet boy to be treated this way. If you love your pet, don't patronize this place.

My pets have been seeing Dr. Schulmeyer for about 2 years now. I almost didn’t want to write a review because I don’t want him to get too busy! He is great. It’s hard to find a vet that is not a “know it all”. He doesn’t try hard to upswell his vet products like other vets do. When he sees my dogs Gus and Biscuit he really comes off as caring to them. A lot of vets have robotic personalities, not him or anybody on his team. Additionally, all his employees and/or techs are awesome. They are efficient and do a great job at what they do. It means a lot when somebody says “I am not sure, let me confirm” instead of doing a confident guess. Overall, I have been to a few different vets, but I am here to stay and I do want everyone to know how great this office is. Thanks!
