How to Save Money at Veterinary Dermatology of New England

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have nothing but good things to say! I love her! Drove 1 hour and 45 mins one way to bring my dog there and it was so worth it! Everyone was so nice! They took so much time to sit down and go over everything with me. I’m very grateful for her time. Everyone was great! I felt very good about the apt. She was very informative and good with my dog.

My cocker Bentley, has terrible allergies which has resulted in chronic ear infections and crusty, itchy skin since he was a puppy. Between Bentley and 3 other "allergic dogs" I have been to 4 Veterinary Dermatologists in MA and NH. Because the commute from NH to Westford MA during business hours can be a nightmare and Veterinary Dermatology of NE does not have Saturday hours, at one point I sought out other vets for Bentley's treatment He is pretty much on a monthly visitation schedule. What I found was follow-up appointments were difficult to book. Sometimes they were booked out for 3 months with the explanation, if he needs to be seen sooner, give us a call. Well, that call often resulted in no earlier openings. And the most concerning was that Bentley's ears were deteriorating quickly and his skin was often a mess. I went back to Dr. Stewart. Final analysis; those monthly follow-up visits booked almost every time I left Veterinary Dermatology of NE was not to generate income to this office but because Bentley NEEDS these appointments. That protocol of meds prescribed to him, though often expensive, is because Bentley NEEDS these meds to save his ears and stay on top of his infections. I TRUST DR. STEWART and her staff are a joy to interact with.

Dr. Stewart was very nice so that’s why I’m giving a star but if you’re expecting a call back from this office, don’t hold your breath. My dog was seen 8/5 and was given long-term medication for his ears. When I returned home from the appointment, the instructions on the bottle of medication contradicted the after care instructions so I called the office to get clarification. I left a voicemail because the office had closed. Since that initial call, I called every week for 3 weeks and spoke to the receptionist each time and she told me the vet technician would call me back. I never received a call back. On the 4th attempt, I indicated (politely mind you) that if I didn’t receive a call back by the end of the day I would be coming to the office the following morning. Dr. Stewart personally called me back that day. We had a follow up appointment on 11/19 which was cancelled the morning of. I was told someone would call me back to reschedule. I called at the end of the week to ask whether I should discontinue the medication or keep administering and was told they’d get back to me. It’s been another 3 weeks and still no call back. Highly recommend going somewhere else especially if you have concerns about your dogs medication.

Unresponsive, is the best way to describe my experience. My poor pup has been without his medication for almost a month now. After multiple faxes and continued attempts from the third party pet med company to obtain approval from Veterinary Dermatology, as well as phone conversations and voicemail personally from me with Veterinary Dermatology of NE, requesting follow up, we still don't have authorization and approval from Veterinary Dermatology for the very med that they prescribed for my dog. The re-fill authorization request from a third party vendor I have been using went out to Veterinary Dermatology of New England a month ago. I understood he needed follow up blood work before VDNE could authorize the prescription re-fill, which we did locally with our vet, and my local vet sent VDNE results the next day. Levels were good and VDNE told me they would authorize the re-fill. That was weeks ago. I live about an hour away from VDNE, but it is still the closest vet dermatologist. At the beginning I was very happy with Veterinary Dermatology. My dog's skin and ears had cleared up. The meds were working. It was great. All of my dog's meds and prescription food are quite expensive. I decided to go through this third party pet med company for both the convenience, and to save myself almost 50% in cost mark up. I understand Vet's may need to mark up the price of prescription somewhat, however, you would think they might also be understanding, compassionate, or at least responsive to someone who needs to get their dogs meds more affordably through a third party. My poor pup is super itchy again, and his skin is turning very pink again, and we are practically right back to where we started over a year ago when we first went to VDNE. I am disheartened and disappointed.

I've brought my beagle to Dr. Stewart twice so far, and have no complaints. I have yet to meet her in person due to covid protocols at the clinic, but that has not stopped the excellent care her and her staff have provided us so far. She seems to really care about not just the dermatology health of my dog, but the overall health of my dog and takes into consideration her other chronic health issues, which is great.
