How to Save Money at VCA Hyannis Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog has digestive and skin allergies which is very common for his breed. I did a diet elimination as recommended by this vet and found that he was allergic to chicken. I made the vet aware of this discovery. My dog was having stomach problems on one occasion and the vet recommended that he be on a soft canned food diet for some time and prescribed a soft food diet. I purchased the food at the vet and went home to notice that the food contained chicken. I now lived 45 minutes away but still chose to stay with this vet as they had been good for my dog up until this point. I called the vet and told them about this and they told me I would have to drive back and return the food. I guess I can understand if that’s their policy but they are 45 mins away and this was their mistake and put my dog in danger. On another occasion the same thing happened and they agreed to refund me without having to return the food but would not give me a refund on my card and instead credited the money to my account so I had to use the money at their office . My dog has repeated skin infections and I just took him to this vet a couple months ago for an infection where they prescribed an antibiotic. I called today because he has another skin infection and tried to get a refill for the antibiotic. They told me my dog would have to be seen for a visit. The office knows I am on disability and on a limited income. Any money that I am using on my dog is less money for my own needs. With a skin infection history and having been there only two months ago, this vet could easily refill the med but they don’t want to. My dog is a bully breed and there are a lot of misconceptions about this breed with people thinking all of them are dangerous to own. I don’t want to surrender my dog to a shelter where he is most likely just going to be euthanized . Even if I as a human had a history of say urinary infections, I could get my doctor to send in refills for frequent infections, but not for my dog. So really the vet here has no heart.

Most recently with the pandemic, my pets were met by a tech at my car and taken in for their appointment. While I watched them go in, with only a brief hesitation by my corgi, I knew they'd be well taken care of. On their return, the smile from the tech happily relaying how well they both did, eased any concerns I may have had. Excellent care! I highly recommend Hyannis Animal Hospital! Thank you!

Dr. Corbisiero is the best at taking care of my dogs. Dr. Zelman saved my cat using her own 4 years ago going way above and beyond! Best practice around.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr Lear. I have one dog with epilepsy and one with anxiety, both are on medication. Dr Lear is so attentive and caring with both of them. He takes the time to listen to my concerns and is great at explaining the next steps. He took the time to call me and patiently go over all my questions regarding my dog’s lab results. He is by far the best vet we’ve encountered! The staff at VCA are also great and responsive! The front desk handle a lot of folks in the waiting room and a lot of calls, and are attentive with them all. The person who handles the medication refills is also amazing - I messed up the timing of requesting a refill for one of my dogs, and she got in the prescription to the pharmacy the same day I requested!
