How to Save Money at MSPCA-Angell West
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my guinea pig Coco here for an emergency visit, and I was so grateful for the amount of love and care he was treated with. Everyone here was so kind, understanding, and helpful. They did everything they possibly could for him, but unfortunately it was his time. Shortly after I got a handwritten sympathy card from everyone who helped him while he was there and it genuinely brought me to tears. I’m so happy that in his time of stress he had so many people who genuinely cared about him. Thank you so much, words cannot express how grateful I am for every single person here. You guys are Godsends ❤️

Stellar service, the exotic techs handled my rats with care and even played with them a bit. Acknowledging my rats discomfort they went as far as to hold and comfort them in between trying to get a sample from her mass(which turned out not to be a tumor). And the ability to mail medications for the rats was helpful as I drive about an hour to visit them. Very pleased with the experience and it's the least stressed my rats have ever been with a vet. 11/10 would come again.

I wish I could give higher than 5 stars! When our 3-year old dog fell extremely sick, the MSCPA-Angell West team treated her with an abundance of love and care. Our puppy came into our family during the pandemic and has never been away from home before her 3-day stay in the emergency hospital at MSCPA-Angell West. Special shoutout to Dr. Louis who calmed our nerves, communicated her condition and results clearly, and sat with us during our after hours visits. It was clear to us throughout her stay that she was in the right hands. If you have a pet in need of emergency healthcare, MSPCA-Angell West is the place to go!!!!

I'm extremely upset with the service at MSPCA - Angell West. My cat has a medical condition that requires medication, and their handling of this situation has been inconsiderate and frustrating. Despite knowing the importance of my cat's medication, they insist on an in-person visit for a prescription refill but won't schedule an appointment before the medication runs out or issue a refill of a smaller quantity between now and next available appointment. I explained that I can't make weekday visits due to my work schedule, and the abrupt discontinuation of this medication is dangerous. Their lack of flexibility shows no regard for my cat's health. For context I was aware that my cat was on his last refill last week and that he has approximately 3 weeks left of medication. Additionally, when I inquired about costs, staff provided the price of the office visit but refused to give even a ballpark estimate for additional charges like lab work or x-rays. How do they expect people to financially plan for significant expenses without any transparency? I don't casually carry a few hundred plus without knowing what to expect. I'm deeply upset and concerned about my cat not receiving the medication he needs. MSPCA - Angel West is doing very little to help, and this lack of support is unacceptable. They've lost my trust entirely.

Our dog had/has an intestinal disorder and lost over a third of her weight. The other vet we were going to did not provide the care she needed, though the tried. Angell West we feel saved her life. They just have the level of experience and training to treat our dog I guess. She is still on prednisone and gained back most of her weight, she is a different dog in that there are lingering digestive problems, but Dr. Gorman and Angell West were/are great. 100% trust and respect. Thank you.
