How to Save Money at Bay State Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Last night my wife and I had to bring our 13 year old cat in for an emergency. We knew he wasn't doing well and expected the worst. Every member of the staff that we interacted with was extremely polite and compassionate, which is exactly what you want when your family member is sick. Our veterinarian Taylor quickly assessed our fur baby Monk's condition and came to speak with us. It was, as we feared, but suspected, too severe to be treated. Instead of pushing us to spend thousands of dollars (which we would've if he could have bounced back to normal), she was straight forward about the nature of his condition and his unfortunate prognosis. We made the extremely painful (for us) decision to end our baby's suffering. We were allowed to stay with him through the entire process, and were given as much time as we needed to say goodbye, and grieve both before, and after the procedure. These people genuinely seem to care for the animals that are brought to them, and they handle emotional pet parents very compassionately. Nobody ever wants to need their services, but when you do, I assure you, this team is exactly who you want involved in your darkest hour. Another little thing that most other emergency vets don't have that was absolutely huge for us, they offer an alternate exit from the building. So if you've lost your loved one, you don't need to walk back out through the waiting room. There is a separate exit where you don't need to see or speak to another human being. I never knew how badly I needed that option, because it has never been an option anywhere else I've been in these scenarios. Thank you Bay State for making an extremely painful experience just a little bit more bearable. We hope to never need your services again, but if we do, it's comforting to know that you're there. We included a few photos of Monk from when he was happy and healthy because you only got to meet him at his worst moment. We thought you deserved to see some of his best. Thank you again for everything you do.

My recent visit to Bay State was due to unforeseen circumstances when my dog, Marley, fell ill. Unfortunately our sweet boy had reached the end of his lifetime and everyone at Bay State made this terribly sad occasion slightly more bearable. The front desk staff were beyond kind both days when we checked in, the vet techs were incredibly sweet when helping us get him on the gurney and the vet was very friendly and genuine when explaining the process to us. One of the front desk staff members came in to review afterlife options along with reviewing pricing(which was also very well communicated and upfront during all conversations) & she handled everything with such kindness & grace . If you’ve ever had to endure saying goodbye to a pet then you know it is one of the saddest occasions you’ll ever be present for. But from the bottom of our hearts we cannot thank the staff at Bay State enough for handling everything so tenderly. I just picked up Marley’s urn last night and again, the staff at the front desk was so sympathetic and apologized sincerely for our loss. Incredible vet hospital, thank you for your kindness.

Great experience! I came here because my dog Chloe (14 years old) was gushing blood from her nose. She was taken in right away to check her vitals to make sure she was stable. We were there for about an hour and a half, as expected because they were busy, and were given updates by the staff every half hour or so. HUGE shoutout to Amanda she was super helpful! Although we still aren’t 100% sure what caused Chloe’s episode they made sure she was stable and helped talk us through what our options were moving forward. It’s really reassuring to know that this place is about a 15 minute drive from us. Thank you for helping my dog!!!

I highly recommend Baystate. Every time we have gone there they have been absolutely amazing. They go above and beyond and I am forever grateful for them. We had to say goodbye to our girl today and through such a hard situation they make it so much easier. This is the second dog we’ve had to say good bye to there and every time it’s been consistent with the amazing help and guidance. Thank you bay state from the bottom of my heart. The effort you put in to make this moment easier does not go unnoticed.

From reception to exit, the Bay State staff were caring and patient; I brought my dog in because of some odd behavior and unfortunately, the diagnosis was not good. The seriousness of the situation caught me off guard and I was not expecting that I would have to make decisions about treatment options for a condition that I was unaware of just a couple of hours previous. I was at a loss, but the doctors explained things patiently and compassionately until I had a better understanding and could think clearly (as a side note: I can't imagine having to do this kind of thing on a regular basis). This was definitely the best place to handle the situation and I am grateful for their treatment and kindness.
