How to Save Money at Animal Hospital of Orleans

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Okay, so my husband and I have now brought each of our three dogs here. One of them is a veteran AHoO Pro - she was my mom's Keeshond and has been seen here for many years. We have seen Dr. Bohon, and have just been very pleased with her professionalism and caring with us and with our dogs. As you can see, and as she said, we have three different breeds with different needs in different stages of life. We have Zoe, a 9 year old Kees, Tucker, a 6 year old Lab, and now we have Sam (Samwise), who in one shot was just 8 weeks old, and is now 6 months old (and a lot bigger!). Dr. Bohon and the AHoO team have been consistently welcoming and caring, treating our animals as any animal parent would want their animals to be treated. They are a "Fear-Free" vet, which means what it sounds like it means, and Zoe, Tuck, and Sam have no problems going and visiting. We have Embrace Pet Insurance, and have had no problems having records transferred for reimbursement. We've been seen for well-puppy visits for Sam, an ear infection for Tucker, and anxiety for both Tucker & Zoe as we introduced Sam into the mix, so a variety of things. We were scheduled promptly and seen on time. No complaints at all, would recommend without hesitation.

We are so fortunate to have a family owned vet clinic in our community. Corporate greed is taking over the veterinary business and this fact will not have a happy ending. The staff are excellent. They’re compassionate and thoughtful, friendly and professional. Thanks for taking such good care of our pets! Thanks for being a great small, local business.

I cannot thank the Animal Hospital of Orleans enough for treating our 19 mos Golden Retriever Luke. We are in Eastham seasonally from May to November. On June 13th we brought our boy to the Brewster Dog Park. We had brought him many times since last year without incidence. That day a Great Dane attacked him. My Husband grabbed Luke as soon as he could to get him out of there. At the time we thought his only injury was broken nails from being pinned against the fence by the Great Dane. We saw no visible bites or blood anywhere else. Four days latter Luke developed a large swelling on his face about the size of half a tennis ball soon after bloody fluid was leaking from it. On inspection my Husband discovered a tiny laceration and that is where the fluid was coming from. That would have been from the Great Dane’s tooth. We tried to have some one see Luke at the Brewster Veterinary with no luck because they had no openings. Eastham veterinary hospital was closing early that day. We were referred to the Dennis emergency veterinary facility and there was a 3 to 5 hour wait there. So we called our vet at home in Leicester Ma. to see him when we got home. In a last attempt I called the Animal Hospital of Orleans. The Dr. said she could see Luke at 11:00 am. Luke had an abscess/Hematoma that needed to be lanced and drained. The Dr. Either Kirby-Madden or Bohon and her techs were able to do Luke between patients and we were very happy! They are very professional and my husband said the facility was very clean. Our vet sent Luke’s records to them and we had our boy back at 1:30. It is so nice to have a vet at the Cape that we can take him to now when we are there away from home. Again thank you so much.
