How to Save Money at Boston West Veterinary Emergency & Specialty

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wonderful experience helping my 2 month puppy through a vomiting/diarrhea/dehydration episode that came on very quickly. They were kind, understanding and knowledgeable. Dr. Gabree & team thank you so much.

Best place to take your furry friends in the area. Super helpful and compassionate staff, reasonably priced, and quick service times. Always feel good bringing my dogs here if there is an issue.

Adding a star because my poor experience was due only because one ‘vet’ in particular. Poor bed side manners, unprofessional and very rude with no compassion for a grieving patient. I went in for a QOL assessment, and Euth’ for a pet rat, I confirmed several times with several different doctors over the phone and in person that I would be able to see my pet post sedation. A vet I hadn’t seen or spoken with before came into my room asking if I needed more time or if I was ready to hand him over, I wanted to confirm for a third time they can do what I was asking this vet shut me down saying absolutely not. Her words were ‘The front desk knows nothing’ and finished it off with ‘feel free to go else where’ mind you it’s 10pm. I asked for more time and contemplated leaving. When she returned a minute later she didn’t apologize for her mistake, she stood over me making me feel very uncomfortable because I just asked for more time. The vet who actual did the procedure was very lovely, compassionate and understanding of the best way to go about this process. She gave my ratty love and explained her method with detail and compassion.

I had to calm myself down for awhile in order to write this review. I'll preface it by urging you emphatically: PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR PET HERE unless you want your grief about your animal's condition to be EXPLOITED by a facility THAT CARES MORE ABOUT $$$$ THAN YOUR BELOVED ANIMAL. It's $230 to walk through the door - fine. But then you'll be "treated" to "Dr. A," a terse, cold doctor without compassion who will only become more impatient when you urge him to help you find more affordable routes so that you can bring your cat home in slightly less pain and then return to your own veterinary clinic as soon as possible. While my poor cat DID have a fatal condition whose prognosis was echoed by the (MUCH MORE LOVING Angell Hospital in Boston, now run by the MSPCA), Dr. A's demeanor was clipped and blunt to the point of cruel. He quoted me $4.5K to help my cat...then brought it down to $2K at minimum. Their prices are EXTORTIONATE. After begging him to give my cat something to alleviate his pain for the night, he reluctantly agreed to rub an ineffective $80 cream into his neck/skin, and only at the final moment reluctantly recommended Angell Hospital. I walked out, drove to Angell (who - to Boston West's credit - echoed the same prognosis for my cat, but with much more loving doctors and better alternative rates for those who could afford it), and yet I still sadly had to put my cat to sleep. But I'm glad that I brought my cat to rest at a caring, humane environment where he was treated with love instead of being considered a dollar bill. Boston West wants a minimum of $300 to euthanize your animal -- and that's without arrangements for cremation. Most animal hospitals (Framingham Animal Hospital, for example) will do it for free out of EMPATHY for you and your animal. BOSTON WEST WANTS YOUR CASH. The reason for the single star is only due to Paulette, the lovely receptionist who warmly listened to me and kept me company during my distress. She had more empathy than any nurse or doctor that I met at Boston West. It makes me infuriated that this facility takes advantage of people's distress with inflated prices and money-minded doctors. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR ANIMAL; THEY WANT YOUR CASH.
