How to Save Money at Main Street Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dad and I have been bringing our kitty, Miro, here since we brought her home 18 years ago. The care has been consistently good, but what inspired me to write this review was the way Dr. Rullan treated us -- all three of us -- through one of the hardest decisions of our lives. When the blood work came back, she made sure we understood what the test results meant and what our options were -- either for euthanasia or further palliative care -- and was prepared to give us as much time as we needed to make that choice. When I brought Miro in for her final visit, Dr. Rullan and the vet techs handled me with kid gloves, which was absolutely what I needed at the time. I was given a comfortable, private room and as much time as I needed to cuddle my girl and say goodbye. When I was finally ready (as ready as I would ever be), Dr. Rullan came in and gently, quietly walked me through each step in the process and let me know what I should be prepared for, and then offered more time if I wanted it. She started only when I was ready, and every single step was prefaced with an explanation and a check-in with me. If I needed some time between steps, she waited until I gave her the go-ahead to continue. When it was over, she once again gave me as much time and space as I needed to say my last goodbyes. I was a sobbing wreck the entire time and not for a single second did I feel self-conscious or judged for it. Going in, I wasn't sure what to expect. But the compassion and gentleness I received from Dr. Rullan and her team during one of the worst moments of my life was just... absolutely above and beyond. There's no such thing as an ideal scenario for losing a family member. But if there were, I think Dr. Rullan provided that for me and Miro. (I also ordered an urn through the clinic by phone after the fact. I have some misgivings because I wasn't charged for it, so I'll update when we receive the ashes -- hopefully in the urn I picked out).

We love Dr Jeff & the others. Kind caring and sweet. Very knowledgeable and clean! Did I mention clean. All the time every visit and I have 2 big dogs so we are there a fair amount! Emergency surgery twice with one of my dogs and everything was handled in a kind and gentle and effective fashion. We have had our share of worms and were notified in a very timely manner as well. Highly recommend this place for your fur kids.

My family and I had a very difficult decision to put our dog down. Her health had declined so bad and rapidly within the last couple months. She was 14 almost 15. We hadn't been here before and we haven't built a long term relationship with a veterinarian because we never found one that we really liked until now. When I called to make the appointment the receptionist was so nice, welcoming and explained the process. I had called a few places and didn't feel as comfortable as when I called Main Street Vet. The receptionist really made me feel comfortable. When we arrived for the appointment the staff was just awesome, polite, courteous and caring. Then we met Dr. Medcraft. He was absolutely the best veterinarian I've ever met. Polite, understanding, caring, explained the whole process, options and truly made me feel comfortable. This is a great practice. We will be taking all our animals here. They deserve this review for the hard work they do everyday and the way they treat people and animals. The way they treated my dog and I was hands down the best service we have had from any vet. Despite the sad circumstances it was so nice to know we were in the best hands. Thank you to all of you for taking great care of us. Keep up the awesome work!

Dr. Metcraft and staff were very caring and professional when my husband and I realized we had to put our 15-year-old cat down as she was having heart problems. Our cat Leo and dog Logan receive excellent care. We are so lucky!

Highly recommend Main Street Veterinary! I can’t say enough good things about them!! They were able to see and treat my sick cat quickly. They gave me clear instructions for taking care of him and letting me know what to expect. The staff and vets were awesome and I will recommend them to all my family and friends.
