How to Save Money at Dorchester Pet Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

the best clinic! with good prices! We are very grateful to Oleg and Alexander for helping our puppy Teddy. They are very kind to him and are always happy to see him. He does not shave to come to visit them for vaccinations. thank you very much for everything!

I do not recommend this or any of the affiliated clinics at their other locations. From the receptionists to the doctors providing care, this is one of the worst clinics I have visited. They mis read my dog's xrays and said that his condition was terminal. After seeing a specialist for a 2nd opinion, it was determined SB Cat and Dog misdiagnosed my dogs prognosis. With heart medication, my dog ended up living for 2 more happy and active years. The staff is rude, unprofessional and lack basic customer service skills and the office is generally unorganized. I do not recommend taking your pets to this Veterinary office.

I decided to take both of my dogs to this clinic because of the low costs, but lately I might just take them back to VCA - where we used to go. The staff is very friendly, but the lady at the front desk is not kind at all. She doesn’t even seem like she enjoys working there. I asked a following up question about my dog’s medication and she responded with attitude. She specifically said “ I don’t know why people keep asking me the same question, when I already told them”. She shouldn’t work there if she treats people like that. Also when I called the clinic not to long ago, to keep them updated about my dog. I realized that it was the same lady that I met today. Even on the phone she was very rude, she assumed that I wasn’t taking care of my dog. Even though I was keeping the vet updated on the situation. I hope they find another receptionist because she’s very unprofessional.

When I first got my puppy I had brought her to this clinic to get her first vaccines. We only had about 2 visits here before we moved. I had since been going to a different pet clinic in Canton, MA. My dog has pet insurance and for one of the recent claims the insurance asked for something called S.O.A.P notes from her very first visit. So I reached out Savin Hill pet clinic to request this notes and I spoke to a lady at the front desk and explained to her the situation. I also explained that the insurance company states the S.O.A.P notes are just detailed office notes I am not sure if it was a communication error but she insist I was asking for "surgery records" and that her exact words " you do not take care of your pet because you have not got all of her vaccines". She then states " I will fax over records, but I do not like when people lie". I was so confused because all I asked for was office notes. She then states "good luck " and clicked on me. I called back requesting to speak to a manager and she states "there is no manager". This is horrible customer service. I need a manager to call me asap or I will just go into the office and request to speak to one in the office.

They take good care of my cats and have reasonable prices. I love doctor Olga. And they were able to schedule me in! Thank you for caring for my kitties Dr. Olga and staff! Edit: still love the staff and doctor Olga but be prepared sometimes for a grumpy encounter with front desk lady. I said no to antibiotics and probiotics for a VIRAL HERPES infection for my cat, and she got upset at me. Said a few hurtful things but ultimately still helped me. I’m still going here Bc I love the technicians (Jeremy, the other nice girl and of course Dr. Olga!) but just prepare your emotional heart for some hurtful accusations sometimes.
