How to Save Money at VCA Metro Cat Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

5 stars doesn't do this place enough justice... They deserve a 10 star review and a standing ovation. The staff at this location sets the bar for what animal hospitals should be. They are friendly, warm, welcoming and caring, to name just a few, to their patients. They acknowledge that their client is someone's family member and not just a means to extort your money. The staff practices fear-free, which means (from what they've explained) they won't put your furry feline best friend under unnecessary stress. They often plan ahead to let owner's know what they'll need before arriving at the door to ensure this. They also don't upsell you into things you don't need just to make a buck like other places. They get to the point of what needs to be done, so clients don't break the bank. The staff always makes themselves available for questions and can usually squeeze my emergencies into a reasonable time to come in. Give them a shot if you have a cat, you'll never want to go elsewhere.

The staff clearly cares a lot about the kitties and for the most part, the service has been great. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because this place feels really $$$ and there have been times when I felt like there were some money grabbing tactics. Maybe it was unintentional, but a couple of examples: -Before an exam, someone at the front desk came to chat with me about running panels for my cat and strongly recommended a more expensive panel because she said he is a senior. I said okay but once the vet saw him, she said she wouldn’t categorize him as a senior. -They put my cat on an expensive urinary diet and have iterated several times that he needs be on it for life (I had asked several times before if it was necessary because the food is $$$). This is fine but then when I had to renew the prescription this year, they wouldn’t do it unless they saw him for an exam even though they had seen him within the last 6 months or so (maybe less). Another vet at a different clinic renewed the prescription without seeing him based on his history. ^None of this is a huge deal and I am a bit of a pushover who probably doesn’t ask enough questions or push for more transparency, but I just wish there was a bit more clarity around costs. I just don’t want to be taken advantage of and don’t think we should be encouraged to pay for things that aren’t absolutely necessary, especially if we have indoor cats. However, I want to be clear that I’m grateful for the care my kitties have received and know that it’s a tough and sometimes thankless job caring for our animals.

I really enjoyed my visit yesterday with Dr. Kabler. I appreciate their sensitivity to their human clients financial concerns/abilities and provide multiple options for route of care. The exam was thorough and Dr. Kabler was great about answering questions and giving advice. I also really appreciated Dr. Kabler's holistic approach and point of view. My only complaint was that my appointment was suppose to begin at 1. I arrived early to the appointment with my cats records and did not see a vet tech until close to 1:20 and the vet until after 1:30. I don't mind waiting, I just would have appreciated being told that when I arrived. None the less, an excellent visit and I highly recommend this clinic.

Excellent Doctors, nurses and all stuff! They make sure what is going on with my cat health condition first, then gave me the best medical option. How they are working is totally high professional work! Thank you for taking care of my cat, Dr.Amelia! My cat is very happy now.

Very nice and caring staff. Exam room was super tiny, my cat got nervous with 4 people surrounding him in an incredibly tiny room but the extra staff left when I mentioned that, which is nice. I couldn’t say the place was super clean though.
