How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency Group

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

As a former vet industry employee, and a current animal lab tech, it was pretty embarrassing to wind up needing them! But my dog managed to knock over some furniture and get into an old roach bait trap that I’d set out when I moved in as a precaution. I couldn’t find the plastic from it anywhere, and assumed he’d eaten the whole thing. I’m still relatively new to the area, but I’m so happy I came to these guys. They were all super helpful, and took me into a room right away. Every tech (Sarah? And there was another, I didn’t catch her name. Had very pretty hair, though!) I worked with was great and knew what they were doing. Dr. Troy was very nice and easy to talk to, and gave me options for what needed to be done for this. Thankfully, it wasn’t really too life threatening with the dose of insecticide he ate, and he’s fine now. Great option! Wish they were a little closer, but it’s worth the trip if you have time.

Best veterinarian ER I have ever had to in Boston during a full year of life of my dog. Cannot explain how professional, caring, and charismatic the staff at VEG are. My pup was in pain, and I was extremely nervous, and the way Dr. Roy supported us all throughout left me speechless, they even left us a little note on my pup’s med bag. The most caring team of ER staff I have ever crossed paths with, they don’t only care about our pets but also about us as owners and that meant the world to me

it was certainly the best place I could take my dog, it was the most memorable experience in my life, I was very nervous and apprehensive, but the team of professionals calmed me down and the cesarean section was a success, all the puppies are fine and the Mom too, thanks to everyone involved. May god bless you all 🙏🏻

I just want to say thank you so so so much to Dr. Kristen Mader and her team who worked on my baby Toast. Obviously having an animal go through an unexpected emergency can be incredibly difficult and emotionally exhausting, the long hours of worrying can really be taxing on you as the owner (and basically parent) as well as your pet. But she made the process go by so smooth, and she explained everything in an incredibly professional and caring manner that was east to understand for someone with no animal anatomy/terminology knowledge. I’ve never been in a situation like that with any of my pets before, and she and her team made it go as smooth and reassured me along the way. If anyone ever has an emergency with your furbabies, please go here!!! They were amazing. Truly the best veterinarians and doctors I’ve seen- they’re life savers. I can’t thank them enough❤️

Found VEG when looking for emergency services for my dog around midnight. Most of the other emergency vets were diverting or had 4+ hour wait. VEG was about an hour to an hour and a half at that time. They had such a wonderful reviews so I figured I would give it a shot and drove to Boston from the South Shore. From the moment we walked in the door the staff was so welcoming and warm. Even my dog who gets very nervous at the vets office started to relax and was comfortable enough with the staff that he took treats and sat down after a while. We were seen within 45 minutes and Dr Cabral was so friendly and nice. He thoroughly explained what he thought was going on and we were in and out very quickly. The staff was so good with medicating my dog where he was comfortable and used a cone instead of a muzzle when he started to growl. I found the prices to be very reasonable, any emergency vet visit is going to cost a couple hundred dollars for the exam fee given that it’s an emergency but I found their pricing for services to be very reasonable. I can’t recommend them enough such a welcoming environment and such kind, caring people!
