How to Save Money at Cushing Square Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This vet office is great! As a dog professional I have to visit and call veterinary offices all the time. I’m often shocked at how slow and unresponsive the front office can be…Cushing Square, Veterinary Clinic is different! When I called them to get vaccination records for a client, the front office was so professional, prompt, and responsive to my request that I just had to write a review. I should also mention we have a lot of clients who say they get outstanding care and great service from the veterinarians and staff at Cushing Square. Five stars to a veterinarian office that goes the extra mile with customer service and care for their clients.

I have found each veterinarian and employee here truly kind, respectful, and helpful. They are empathic and truly want the best for your pet’s health and safety. Since my cats are only two and had not had health issues or many appointments during their time with this practice, I didn’t know what to expect when they had an emergency and I needed to ask for help. Dr. Binder’s expertise really came through during the appointments and in her follow-up communication to manage the cats’ recovery. She was insightful, detail-oriented, and comprehensive in her investigation of why they were ill and what they would need to get better, even down to specific advice about how to get them to take the medications. I have never had a vet prescribe so many medications at once but given how sick the cats were, and that what they had received from the ER had not prevented dehydration and diarrhea, the cats were very vulnerable, and Dr Binder’s more aggressive approach is what brought them back to being themselves. She realized they were in pain and included pain meds and anti-nausea meds, not just the anti-vomiting or anti-diarrheal or appetite stimulant - she also cared for their well-being in terms of minimizing suffering. Dr. Binder took the time to review multiple emergency records and followed up about results after one of the cats had to see a specialist. The type of care she offered is what one would hope to receive from an internist/PCP for humans, let alone cats. Additionally, the practice manager is very skilled at working with Trupanion on behalf of clients, which is a generous thing to do that many veterinary practices do not offer. She even helped straighten out problems I was having related to Trupanion claims from an ER external to their practice, in the process of filing the new claims. Finally, it really has a community feel where the staff look out for one another, and it is clearly important to Dr Binder that everyone working there feel comfortable and respected in their workplace. When a medical professional is concerned with the well-being of the patients, their caregivers, and all employees, that’s the type of person anyone would want to be in charge of the practice they depend on in case of emergency.

So far we’ve had a great experience at this office! The vet was very informative and told me things about my cat that other vets never did (we’ve been taking them in yearly etc) They were even calm and collected while handling my “spicy” Siamese cat.
