How to Save Money at Montgomery Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Every employee here truly loves animals and what they do. I have always had positive interactions with the team at Montgomery. While I have not used the vet service, I have used the hotel several times. My dog was just boarded there for 3 days. I have never left him for this long and was extremely nervous. He was diagnosed with an infection by an out-of-state vet while I was on vacation the prior and was given 3 medicines, 2 of which he would finish during his stay at the hotel and one which he would still be on when I picked him up. I called two times prior to drop off to ensure that his medicines would be administered and was assured they would be. I reminded them at drop off, included a paper with instructions in his medicine bag, as well as a paper with instructions in his bag with his food and toys. I was assured at drop off that medicine would be administered, that he would have his provided food, and that I would receive pictures on the third night. I never did receive any updates on how he was doing, but I figured no news was good news. When I picked him up, his medicine had not been administered for the entire stay. I was able to talk with a vet there about what I should do to proceed with his treatment who was very professional, apologetic, and thorough in her attempts to make the situation right. I left a bit frustrated but understand that oversights happen. When I got home and unpacked his bag, I realized none of his food had been eaten. My dog has a history of stomach sensitivities and hypoglycemia related to not eating, the latter of which I know is documented on his file at the hotel. I told the girl who did his intake he had his own food, wrote detailed feeding instructions on how often to administer his food on a paper in his bag, showed the tech who took him back where his food was in his bag, labeled his food bag with instructions… yet he was given food I did not provide. Upon this discovery, I called to discuss my concerns. Once I finally got connected to the appropriate person, she was extremely apologetic, but was unable to provide me with answers as to why this would happen. While I love the pet hotel and truly think they love the pets that walk through their doors, it is unacceptable that my dog went without his medication for three days and also was not given any of his provided food, especially considering the amount of information I wrote out and put in his bag and reminded them of all of this prior to and at drop off. Money is no concern to me when it comes to providing my dog with the best possible care when I am away from him, but the amount I paid here for him to not receive his medication or provided food is outrageous. I love the staff at Montgomery and they way they love all the animals that walk through their doors, but a better system needs to be in place to prevent an oversight like this from happening to any other pet.

About a week ago, we experienced an emergency situation where the choice of emergency surgery was the only answer. The team that was at the front desk quickly went into action as we came thru the front door. The staff and surgery team kept us posted as to what was going on and to check on us to see how we were holding up. As, we sat there waiting, I took note of the staff and how they worked together as a team should. The professionalism that each of them portrayed, the concern they shown was phenomenal. To all the staff members of Montgomery Animal Clinic, thank you for your dedication, professionalism, and concern you show to all patients and their owners. Keep doing what you are doing!!!!!!!
