How to Save Money at Veterinary Specialists of Greater New Orleans

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog Taco, suffered from yeast infections on the skin and in the ears for years. All the other vets I took him to would treat him, he would be better for a few months and then it would come back. The doctors here ran several tests not only on his skin but also on his blood. They found out what he was allergic to, then showed me options for his treatment and after all was said and done he was CURED. All the money I spent through the years treating Taco I could have just spent it once and had him cured. I love this vet.

I cannot say enough good things about VSGNO! The entire team is so dedicated and compassionate when it comes to our four legged family members. You can tell as soon as you walk into VSGNO that your pets are in good hands. Dr. Ramos has been treating my weimaraner's Louis and Zoe for a little over a year now. Louis had a medium sized mast cell tumor located on his inner upper thigh. Dr. Ramos treated him with a new chemo injection which did the trick. Louis has been in remission for over 4 months now. Zoe suffers from an autoimmune disease called pemphigus which causes soars and lesions on her paw pads. Dr. Ramos passion and determination in finding the appropriate treatment has been the world to us. After some time, we believe we have found it and Zoe has been in remission for a few months now. We will continue to bring our pets here for any dermatology issues. Yes, they are on the expensive side, but you're getting what you pay for, high quality, reliable care for your pet. No price tag is too high for your loved one. Highly recommend VSGNO to anyone looking for a high quality, passionate dermatologist in the Louisiana area!

Dr. Ramos provided exceptional care for our English Bulldog with allergies. She is highly knowledgeable and up to date on the literature, and spent ample time explaining our options. We were able to try out a new treatment (not offered by all vets) as previous ones hadn’t worked for us. Highly recommend!

Overall we were disappointed with the service and care that we received from this practice over the last year. The front-office staff were frequently rude and prone to mistakes--on multiple occasions they either omitted portions of our dog's prescription or provided incoherent/contradictory instructions. Furthermore, Dr. Ramos's overly academic approach seemed to prioritize lecturing her patients over listening to their better instincts. We cancelled our last appointment, and our dog later died, but we never did hear back from the so-called veterinary specialists of New Orleans.

Dr. Ramos is a fantastic dermatologist. She has a world of training and experience that goes beyond most vets. She gave me so much information that I was able to make a very informed decision on treatment and spent as much time with me as needed for questions. She also knew from experience to ask questions that saved us unnecessary treatment, which was incredibly appreciated. She is a kind and extremely confident vet, and I don't say that easily having had some who were horrible over the years. Her staff followed up to see how my little guy was doing with the treatment that she prescribed and she got right back to me with a question that I had. I recommend her 1000%
