How to Save Money at Metairie Small Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Every staff member is highly qualified. Courtney has been giving our senior dog laser treatments and he is acting like a puppy again. We are so happy with MSAH. We have been patients for 8 years now.

We were traveling in our motorhome on vacation from RI. I appreciated their kindness in seeing my 15 yr old Winston that had developed a cough in our travels. They were thorough in their evaluation and determined it was allergies and inflammation, not kennel cough, lung, or heart issues. Prescribed him some meds to treat his symptoms and we are back on the road! Thank you Dr Candice and your whole team!

I brought my dog here on a recommendation from our vet, when I initially spoke to Dr. Connor, he was great, patient, informative and that never changed the whole time I was there and my dog was under his care. Even when he was discharged, Dr. Connor made sure to go over everything with me, informed me of what to do in case anything happens and what to watch for, was very thorough. Raven the receptionist is probably the best person you can get on the phone, she so sweet, patient, and takes the time to explain everything to you, she makes you feel comfortable when you’re talking to her, especially about the care your pet is receiving and you feel much more assured. I had several phone calls with Dr. Allison, she did most of the work on my dog as I brought him in first thing in the morning. I didn’t love the first time I spoke to her, I felt rushed and looked over but I chalk that up to her having a very busy schedule that day and my dog being a walk-in, although he was meant to be closely monitored. As I said, I had several other phone calls with her through the day and on each of those other calls, she was much more receptive to me and my questions and even did us a huge favor which I can’t thank her enough for. There was one receptionist William, who answered the phone at early morning who could’ve just been tired and wanting to go home after an overnight shift, who I didn’t care for the attitude he displayed on the phone, I was calling concerned about my dogs vomiting and he couldn’t sound more inconvenienced. The receptionist who unfortunately I can’t remember her name but she was such a sweetheart, checked us in and got my dog good to go and was just a pleasure to talk to. The receptionist who checked us out in the evening was also very sweet, patient throughout my billing questions and was just overall very helpful. Mostly a great team there and I’d bring my dog back especially if I can get the right people again 😊

Our pet get the best at MSAH! The doctors and assistants know our puppy by name and are always excited to see him. We have always been very happy with treatment—both preventative care and any other needs.

My dog trainer referred me to this animal hospital. 8/5/23 was my first time taking my dog there for a medical concern. The staff was very welcoming & helpful. Dr. Morgan is very sweet & was very thorough with her examination. My dog tends to get anxious when at the vet but Dr. Morgan along with the vet tech made him feel very comfortable with being in their care. I’m glad my trainer referred me to this animal hospital b/c I know he will be in great care whenever he needs to visit. Thank you all for all that you all do for our pets 😁.
