How to Save Money at Perkins Road Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My Fur Baby Lena had a massive cyst within her mouth and jawbone. She is only 10 pounds. Her Vet Dr. Sancho..highly recommended Dr Richey & his staff. I cannot even explain (BUT I WILL TRY) - I WOULD NOT CALL THIS A FACILITY ! 💓IT IS A HOME💓with An Entire Staff that is so understanding, personal, kind, very knowledgeable, & full of compassion. My Lena is home & doing fantastic. Our lives have changed because of the severity of the location of her cyst one fall, playing with the wrong toy or accidentally bumping her jaw could completely shatter the remainder of jawbone. Dr. Richey explained in detail how there was not enough left to attach bone graft. But I will tell you this. They have become a part of our family and will be the first in the event an injury happens. 💥HIGHLY RECOMMEND💥

Dr. Braden was amazing at quickly diagnosing and providing a solution for my service dog. She didn't just settle until she knew what was best for my Sally. Quick diet change and meds and Sally was fetching ducks 2 days later. Thank you, Dr. Meena Braden

Dr. Ritchie is the best of the best. I absolutely will not trust my dogs, that both have tracheal collapse, with any other vets for their dentals. Each time I have had their dentals, that were a must, they were far better after having the dental. Their coughing slows way down to minimal, with all the infection removed. He truly is a wonderful vet. I have put my full trust in a vet with two of the most precious dogs in my life and each time I have left so pleased with the outcome. I honestly feel he has extended both of their lives even though they are more delicate cases to handle. I would never trust another vet for a dental after going to him. Does it cost more? Yes, but you get what you pay for! He has the extensive education, as a Board Certified Dentist, and he is the best of the best when it comes to this type of surgery. Thank you for all you do. My dogs lives extended and are better because of your great work.

Very friendly people. After adopting 2 kittens in 2 months (one on purpose, the other by chance) I was looking for a new Vet closer to my house. I wasn't in a hurry but one of the kittens got an infected abscess from being feral for too long and I needed expert care quickly. I called Perkins Road Vet and at first they couldn't fit me in that afternoon but after I told them about my sick kitten the nice receptionist said she could make an exception and fit me in at the end of the day. I was EXTREMELY APPRECIATIVE. When I arrived they were super cool and saw me and my two babies immediately. The Dr and her nurse were pleasant and thorough and I never felt like they were rushing things just to quit for the day. They TRULY cared about my kittens and fixed the sick one up best they could, giving me the antibiotics and all that good stuff to finish the job. They scheduled a follow-up the next week but by 3 days later the abscess was healed and the kittens fever was down. The next visit we began all the vaccines and blood work, the usual kitten stuff... Same deal, pleasant and thorough and acting like they really enjoyed animals and helping them stay healthy. I've had a few cats and other vets in the past, I can honestly say that these are the nicest people I've dealt with and I'll be visiting them from now on 😻😻😻

This is the most excellent vet I have ever taken my cat to. Dr. Curt Richie did an amazing job on his dental work and oral surgery earlier this year. I recently visited Dr. Meena Braden for a wellness visit and she asked many questions about his health, behavior, and history, which led to her discovery of his liver and thyroid issues. I have never had a vet ask such thorough questions before and am grateful she did. The front desk staff are also extremely friendly and great at answering questions. This place also is a member of Pet Assure which gives me a 25% discount off of their services. I highly recommend this practice.
