How to Save Money at VCA Woodford Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have a 14 year old pup that I care greatly for. For years and years, we had a routine vet in Louisville that we had a great relationship with. However, we moved to Lexington and went through many vets trying to establish the same high level of care. We finally found it. VCA Woodford, and specifically, Dr. Critchlow has an unparalleled level of care, compassion, intelligence and thoroughness when addressing my pet companion's health needs. I will assure you that you will get complete devotion and high level health care that your pet deserves from him and VCA. I couldn't be more thankful for finding this group and I will always utilize this vet practice and Dr. Critchlow for my pet needs. As a working professional in healthcare, I understand how critical a good and trustworthy practitioner is. Dr. Critchlow is exactly that.

We took our very sick 16 year old cat to VCA hospital. The vet stuck her with steroids while telling us she could die any moment now. This prolonged her agony, as she was in pain four days before passing. The vet made blood tests and charged $600 to conclude "she has a liver problem" and give her the steroids. Even offered to put her in observation overnight without any treatment or plan moving forward in mind. A ripoff. But worst of all, inhumane. My cat deserved mercy. They went for the maximum payout they could get.

The staff was attentive and friendly. I also used the grooming service and was very pleased even though they were experiencing staffing issues. The girls still smell fresh after a week.

I love this place. It’s a pretty good drive and I really don’t like to drive. BUT! Its worth it! For me it’s just one of those happy places. Everyone is kind and friendly! Dr. Jolly is so great with all our animals. My dog cries with excitement right before we pull in the parking lot, EVERY time.!He loves it too!

Absolutely horrible, do not recommend unless your pet is literally on death’s doorstep and you have no other option. I took my dog in for a routine nail trimming, and without my knowledge or consent, he was muzzled. he’s never had any problems or shown aggression to anyone. Everyone at the vet loves him and we’re constantly getting compliments about how sweet he is. We’ve had 6 other nail appointments prior, and he’s never needed a muzzle. And when I was informed they used a muzzle AFTER the appointment was done, they told me “The muzzle wasn’t used for fear of aggression. We just used it.” He was also given additional sedation which I was not informed about until after, which is dangerous because he was already given 2 doses the morning of the appointment in preparation, so they could have overdosed him. It’s terrifying to trust these people with your pet’s life when they don’t even communicate what’s happening behind closed doors. You will also be up charged for any medication, without being told. Ask for the paper prescription and have it filled at your normal pharmacy, it’s much cheaper. Overall, the price is not worth the quality of care you actually receive long term.
