How to Save Money at Lewis Veterinary Practice

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so incredibly happy and pleased with Dr. Lewis and his staff! It is very clear to see how much they care about animals and my 2 cats absolutely LOVE him! They answer all my questions, if I call with questions they answer no problem, the couple emergencies I have had he has been right there no questions asked. I saw a couple other reviews saying how he was over priced and I honestly have no idea where they got that from. He is very much under other vets in the area, but that does absolutely nothing to the quality of service I have gotten. I legitimately have recommended Dr. Lewis to anyone who has asked me about what veterinary services and will continue to do so.

I've visited four veterinary clinics in town over the 14 years of my dog's life, and this experience was by far the best. Since my dog rarely needed vet care, we never really settled on a clinic that felt like home. When the time came to put our dog down, I chose this clinic simply because it was close to my office. Kris was incredibly professional yet gentle and empathetic with our dog. Since this was our first and final visit, he took the time to visit with us, listen to his history, and discuss possible treatment options. Ultimately, we agreed that it was time to put him down. The process in the office was peaceful, allowing enough time to grieve without feeling rushed. The fees were reasonable, and the staff were supportive.

No Last Name

I just wanted to take a second to leave a review. Normally I rarely do for anyone good or bad but I felt the level of care we get here at Lewis Veterinary warrants a word or two be said. Both staff and doctor are extremely polite and knowledgeable. You get the information you need straight to the point and you are put in a postion feeling like you are informed enough to make the best decision. Vet medicine isn't always the same as with us people; sometimes you have to make an educated guess more or less. Getting the full picture from the start is invaluable in those instances. Something else worth mentioning is that they are extremely punctual which I know sounds odd to point out but which among us haven't sat around waiting on any type of doctor before? Even though it's a small practice, I've never felt ignored or like we were getting rushed care or ANYTHING less than the best. Finally, hate to mention money but this is the real world and it's a consideration. Their prices are extremely reasonable, fair and more than consistent with the level of care your pet receives. It is standard practice for a business to expect payment in full, especially a small business, so I feel the complaints here regarding payment in the reviews are off base. Being stuck with past due balances from other patients could eventually affect their ability to provide good care your pet deserves so I feel it is a responsible course of action as well. If you are in the market for a new vet, strongly consider Lewis.

Great experience. Quick, professional, and reasonably priced. Offered me options with good explanations and no unnecessary sales pressure. We'll definitely return.

Took my little guy Harley in today, very nice staff. The process seemed pretty straight forward, Dr. Lewis explained everything in a way that left me with no questions, and I was very appreciative of it.
