How to Save Money at Bluegrass Animal Care Center-Radcliff

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

First time Mr. Lou has been here and he loved it! The staff is very friendly and cared about him. He was not afraid and the whole visit went quick. The prices are reasonable so you don’t leave feeling like you just gave up your savings. I would recommend this vet!!

I typically only have very positive things to say about Bluegrass Animal Care Center. However, today was a huge disappointment. We found out our dog had a mass on his spleen 2 weeks ago today and I made the decision to remove his spleen within minutes. We saw Dr. Dennis for that visit and she was great. Dr. Williams performed the surgery the following Monday and I am always pleased with his care and communication. Unfortunately, it has been a bit of a rollercoaster since surgery. I took him back 3 times with concerns, two of which resulted in antibiotics. Last night he was acting different around 1030. We thought it was his pain meds. He eventually started resting but at about 0500 we knew something was wrong. By the time I was leaving he couldn’t walk. We decided to wait until Bluegrass opened since they knew him and could give us the best advice on how to proceed. I show up at 0800, carry my 65lb dog because he was lethargic and couldn’t walk, his gums were very pale and I was told I could drop him off and the vet could call me when she had time to see him. I understand this practice but it was pretty clear my dog was near end of life. I wish exceptions could be made for this situation so I could have stayed with him. The vet (Dr. Theno) calls me within 15 minutes and we have a 4 minute conversation. She explained what she was seeing and gave me options. I asked her what she would recommend. Within seconds I had made the decision to let him go. I said, “I am pretty sure that is what we are going to do but I am going to call my husband. Should I return now for that?” I had already turned around, I had never even wanted to leave him for a second, and I was really asking if I should expect euthanasia immediately when I returned. She responded, “It really is time to shit or get off the pot.” I think that is all I really need to say about this but this all happened so fast that we weren’t even on the pot! I had not wavered. I feel like discussing options with my husband was reasonable. If he wasn’t suffering, I would have taken him elsewhere for euthanasia although that process was smooth and I really appreciated how the room was set up and being so close to him. The vet tech, Juliana, was amazing and she is always so good there. When I think of my dog’s last day, I will always think about the vet I trusted telling me to “shit or get off the pot,” when I was making a literal life or death decision about my best friend.

Bluegrass Animal Care killed Felicia yesterday. I wish I had come on here and given everyone an update that Felicia was home and doing well yesterday. But that's not what happened. I went to pick her up at 4:30 expecting to bring her home, happy, healthy, alive. Instead when I arrived i was left waiting in the waiting room for 15 min before they came out and told me Felicia was showing signs of distress and they were doing xrays to make sure nothing was wrong. They took me back to be with her and tortured her trying to draw blood then put me in the car with her to take her to a vet an hour away in louisville, during rush hour. As soon as I left I called Dave Stahlin while I was driving. I fast became hysterical on the phone. Shortly on the road Felicia's breathing went from panting, loud and labored turned to quiet, long in between gasps. Then nothing. This is where I was doing 90 during rush hour on the gene Snyder. Why in gods name isn't there an emergency service for pets? Why isn't there lights and sirens and emergency cpr in transit for them?! Once to the er vet they asked if we wanted heroic measures. Absolutely we did. I don't know how long they did them. I don't know how long we were even there. At the point we arrived there I was so hysterical David handled everything. I drove home on autopilot and David broke it to the girls while I hugged her leash and collar and cried more. At this point i had been crying for hours. How did I even have any tears left. Hell I'm still crying while typing this. When we lost Florence Knightingale 7 yrs ago to this month, we knew it was coming. She had an autoimmune we struggled with the vet to figure out what it was and she declined gradually over 6 months when her quality of life wasn't good anymore and came to the decision with the vet to put her down so she wouldn't suffer anymore. But this, this is trauma. I went to the vet expecting to bring Felicia home. I took her to the vet for a routine spay and I had even gotten a call hours earlier saying she was doing great. Then to have to drive her alone to another vet and watching her decline in the rear view mirror unable to do anything except fight against traffic and asshole drivers. Why did this happen?! What went wrong. I knew when I got there I was going to get one of the biggest goofy smiles of hers when she saw me. Just like she gave me before we went into the vets when we got there in the morning. As she was trying to appease me and asking not to go into this place that wreaked of fearful dogs and death. We will be getting answers though. An autopsy is being performed and we will receive her ashes and a pawprint once it's all done.

I've been wanting to take my pup to a vet that I feel comfortable with, that will know my dog and her issues. A place that actually cares about her and treats us with kindness and empathy and listens to my concerns and helps. Well I definitely found it here ❤️ I called and made an appt, the worker on the phone was friendly and efficient and got an appt for me quickly. I brought my girl in on the day of, filled out some paperwork and talked to the tech for a bit about whats been going on. She listened, checked her, wrote everything down and loved on my dog and gave her lots of attention. My dog absolutely loves people so she was in heaven at this point lol. The vet and the tech came back and we all talked about everything, my dog was a little scared of the table moving up, but they both gave her lovins and she felt comfortable. The vet checked her out and was very gentle. He then talked to me about everything while the tech took my dog very happily to get weighed. She then recieved her shots which she hated of course, but both techs were very sweet and gentle with her and gave her a treat. We left with some allergy medicine and very clear directions on how to administer it, our next appt for her booster quickly made and all of my concerns were heard and taken care of, I felt so much better. The total cost of everything was surprisingly low, I asked the tech to take my card quickly before she changed her mind lol. Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with the care and attention given to both of us. It's refreshing to know we chose somewhere that cares about thier patients so much even at the first meeting. My pup left so happy and when I mention the vet, she gets all excited lol. Can't beat it.

I’m a disabled veteran so to say money is tight is an understatement. I paid for my dog to get neutered and before I could get him neutered he was hit by a car. And they won’t allow me to use that money towards another dog. They are literally stealing my money. I won’t do business here I hope that no other veterans go here as well.
