How to Save Money at Stony Brook Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Laura, (Dr. Fulkerson) I can't put into words how much I love and appreciate you and your staff. For those who read this post, today was the hardest day for me as I said goodbye to my handsome 15 yr.old miniature schnauzer, Casper. I have been taking my babies to this facility for their entire lives. We have been treated like family here. My kiddos have been through alot and Laura has gone above and beyond to make sure they stayed healthy and thriving. I was so reassured about the compassion this place has for my babies when Casper crossed that rainbow bridge and I looked up to see Dr. Fulkerson and Megan in tears, it really moved me and I knew I made the right choice when I took Casper there over 15 yrs. ago.

Dr. Fulkerson now takes care of both my rescues, as well as my aged malamute, and Jasper my black beagle mix (pic) is not easy, he was so upset from being separated from me this morning his temperature soared and he had to be put in a cooling room, and she asked detailed questions about his high reactionary personality. All are home and well. That's where the good review ends. I was "schooled" on getting the weight off 2 of my dogs, and while Dr. is on point, their kinda fatsos right now, I did not appreciate hearing it again from the tech who brought out my malamute on how she's overweight. I got it the first time....from the Doc. I also would have appreciated a headsup during my reminder call that if I brought a mask I could go inside with my dogs. It's been two years, how was I supposed to know to bring a mask. It didn't do me any good to tell me that as I'm hauling the dogs to the door....also, the front desk girls are not helpful. I was charged for 4 Bravecto that I didnt even ask for. If I was given my bill to view it before I gave them my charge card I could've said so. Luckily I asked what were all the charges BEFORE they ran my card. I was also charged for fecal samples that they didn't get. So to go from an $800 bill to what services were actually rendered was $522, I think my reaction was on point, and lastly to hear one of the girls say I don't appreciate the way you are talking to us was the cherry on top. There's the lost art of "throwing someone a bone". So, I guess I do owe the office staff an apology, that I'm not a mind reader. The five stars stays, but we won't be

I will be a lifer at this place, i cannot even explain how good they have been to all of my pets. I went with my girlfriend to her dogs vet and the experience was laughable knowing how much better Dr. Laura was compared to this other veterinarian. I decided to switch Eclipse over to Dr. Laura. Also, the vet technicians have always been so nice and helpful. I will never hesitate to pay a little bit more for the BEST service for my animals. Thank you guys so much. -Drake, Jamie & Eclipse

Truely an amazing staff here! Established our senior dog here last year when we moved to town and they were all so great with him! When he passed away they were so thoughtful and understanding during that hard time. Even sent called us to check in on how we were doing and sent us a card! For being a patient for less than a year they exceeded our expectations! We have added a new furry friend back to our family and have chosen to return to this vet due to how well they handled the last one. Prices are great too so we don’t have to worry about an expensive vet visit that turned out to be gas 😅

I take all of my rats to Dr.Fulkerson for any issues and unfortunately, euthanasia when needed. She and her staff (especially Mikayla who typically works the front desk) have ALWAYS been sweet, understanding, and compassionate toward me and my ratties. They are a little more expensive than other Animal Hospitals I’ve been to, but it’s so worth it. When my very first rat had to pass, they worked with me to get her cremated and returned to me, alongside a heartfelt card hand signed by Dr.Fulkerson and her staff. I treasure it and the amazing things they’re doing. HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR EXOTIC ANIMALS!!!
