How to Save Money at Audubon Animal Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Caring folks who tend to run a bit disorganized with paperwork and billing. Love having a vet close by. They don’t have all the meds we need in house each visit so often need to make other forays before our four-legged family members can start to mend. Highly recommend.

We have been with Cherokee/Audubon Animal for several years for 3 dogs. For routine visits, the prices are affordable and the veterinarians are knowledgeable. However, we have noticed the compassion is lacking from the office staff. You can’t ever get the front desk on the phone, and when you leave callback info but don’t get a callback, it makes it hard to schedule a needed visit. If you ever need emergent services during business hours, they don’t work with you or offer any kind of compassion. Upon calling other clinics in town, they were so kind, asking me about my “kiddo” and offering me options of where I could go/getting us in last minute. Audubon did not care about my sick dog, whom they have seen as a patient for years, didn’t ask any questions or offer any support. There is a reason in the reviews the most common word is “prices.” You pay for what you get. What good is a vet clinic who doesn’t help you when in a situation?

The staff is friendly and personable and cares about what matters most, your pet! That's why I wouldn't use any other veteranarian practice in Louisville! I have been taking my pets (past & present) here for 20 or so years, and not once have i been disappointed by the care my pets received. If you're looking for a veterinarian office that is friendly and truly cares about what matters to you most, your pet, then this is the place to go.

I feel blessed to have found this facility when my previous Vet passed away. The service I have received is amazing. Very professional and friendly. I feel like I have found another family.

Many people are saying that this is the place to go.. I wish I spent my money at a different vet I have so many issues with them. Starting off was having an issue with my dog at home and called them for guidance and they said that they don't know and can't help me and it was a VET I was so outraged so not only did my dog have glue on her teeth not knowing what to do cause posion control wanted 80 dollars for their Advive. Second I recently took my dog up there again and they started construction IN THE WALK PATH having to go around the parking lot how outrageous not only after that when we were finally able to get in we waited a little bit so when we got back in the vet room everything was okay when we where checking out my dog got excited to see another dog (she is not aggressive in any way shape or form unless there is a dog in the room when she is eating) so she sniffed the dog and one of the receptionists said "don't let your dog get near her she's reactive." REALLY!? Not only that they have two patient rooms but yet they had 8 people cramped up in the tiny waiting area with there dogs and other animals it's just stupid I will not come back please save yalls money and go somewhere else
