How to Save Money at Bluegrass Veterinary Specialists and Animal Emergency

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They saved my boy Apollo’s life!! After a week of rapid decline, 2 visits to our regular vet, and one overnight stay at Metro in Louisville we continued to be sent home with no answers and “let’s just wait and see if he gets better.” Made a snap decision to go to Bluegrass one night around midnight and I’m so thankful we did. They admitted him and were able to give a diagnosis that same night. I was so relieved to finally at least have an answer, even if the diagnosis wasn’t great. He stayed for a few nights for the supportive care he needed and I went to pick him up and he was a whole new cat!! We’ve been home with him for almost 3 weeks now and he’s doing amazing, (and he looks adorable with his fur boots). I don’t know what would’ve happened if we hadn’t gone to the right place at the right time but I’m so glad we did. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and kind. I will recommend Bluegrass to anyone looking for the best care for their babies.

Words aren't good enough to express my appreciation for everyone who works at this clinic! My son and I brought in our precious little girl April on Sunday September 1, 2024. The care she received was so wonderful. The doctors explained everything to us in a professional and personable way. I appreciate you all for the great care and love and understanding and sensitivity with which you took care of our little girl. She was the perfect dog for my entire family!! You helped us to make the horribly painful but necessary decision to make sure she didn't suffer. Thank you for ALL you did!! I very highly recommend this clinic to anyone who has a pet emergency!! They will treat your pet with love and care and give the best care possible in any situation!!

My experience with this business was EXCELLENT. We brought my elderly cat in, she was immediately taken back, and I was barely through the paperwork when the vet came to talk to us. My cat had passed away before they could do anything further, but the staff handled it very professionally and empathetically. We were taken back to a room and had as much time as we wanted with my cat, and they wrapped her up so sweetly in a blanket and pet bed, so it just looked like she was asleep. After that, we were given the options for cremation, which were explained in a lot of detail and very gently. Overall, I'm very glad this is where we took Callie to be taken care of, even if she couldn't receive the full care they could provide. Thank you for treating my sweet girl like a part of our family.

I took my rabbit here with GI stasis and drove over an hour. As soon as walked in, they remembered from when I called and got her right back. I knew going into this it would be expensive, but I was not judged at all for turning down the more aggressive treatment as I could not afford it. I saw Dr. Whitney Jones and she quickly formulated a different outpatient care plan to give my bunny the best chance. With the medicine she was given at the vet and the medicine we were sent home with, my bunny is back to her old self and doing well! They have even called to check on her. I appreciate the girls at the front desk and Dr. Jones for being thorough and considerate.
