How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This place is a ripoff. We took our new puppy there for her 12 weeks checkup because we had a “free exam” coupon. With the vaccines, it came out to be $220, $160 after the coupon. A different vet that we use for our other dog only charges $105 for the same service. I was also quoted spayed will cost $450 compares to other vet at $175. They also tried to sell me a $700 yearly plan as soon as we sat down. I should’ve walk out at the moment.

Inappropriate communication from Sarah at front desk. We dropped off Daisy at 9am & we were told she would be worked in after vet completed surgeries. At NOON my daughter called to check on OUR dog. Sarah very sarcastically said "I told your mom Daisy would be worked after surgeries" GEEZ Sarah --- after 3 HOURS I don't feel calling to check on our family pet deserved your sarcasm!! Good pet parents FOLLOW UP on their BELOVED pet.

Queen Bitsy

Staff are very nice and professional. My Queen Bitsy has been a happy patient for over 3 years. I'm very pleased with the wellness plan. Bitsy is now 12 years old and has some chronic issues. They have a drop-off service, so I can bring her in right away, and they will squeeze her in when they can, and I pick her up in the evening. This has been wonderful, I know she's being monitored instead of me being a nervous wreck at home with her until I can take her in. We usually see Dr. Grucek and Bitsy loves her, and the techs too.

The staff is friendly & helpful...I've never had a bad experience. I also don't know why everyone is complaining about their health plans. I signed up our Beagle when she was just a puppy and she's 7 years old now. The health plan covers her annual exams (including blood work, shots, & fecal exams) plus one teeth cleaning per year. They've saved us THOUSANDS. The only thing we pay for is the heartworm, flea/tick prevention, and to get her nails trimmed & anal glands expressed. We've taken her to be seen ~3-4 times (outside of her annual check-ups) and each time they're friendly and helpful, and the out-of-pocket cost is minimal because we get a discount on those exams as well. We also get a printout of the total cost it would have been without the plan and a running total of how much the plan has saved us. Read the fine print before you sign up for anything and you'll probably not be disappointed. If you're not willing to commit to this plan long-term, then it most definitely is not for you. Otherwise, it's a great investment.

I was a Banfield member for 4 years. As my dog got older the vets insisted I keep her on drugs to suppress her immune system. When she is on those drugs she is miserable. When she isn't...she is happy and full of energy. They want me to give her those meds or else they won't give her vaccines and other meds requiring a needle. I asked for mediation with their corporate office 3 times. They never got past..."we got your email and someone will be in contact..." Very dissatisfied!!!
