How to Save Money at Pet Haven Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have taken all three of our dogs here and they have taken great care of them. They are very affordable compared to most vets in Wichita. They always try to get you in as soon as possible. They also take the time to call and confirm appointments and encourage you to call them if you have questions. One of our dogs we found in pretty rough shape at first and they did a great job of nursing her back to health and making sure we were taking the right steps to get her there. We have also had our two other dogs spayed and neutered here. I had no hesitation leaving our fur babies with them. They are very kind and compassionate even with our wild puppy. I 100% recommended Pet Haven to all my friends and family because I truly believe they love their jobs and they do a great job caring for our pets❤️❤️

My dog had surgery with them. After they put her under general anesthesia, they noticed they did not have the supplies needed to do one of her procedures— this was not because once they got into surgery and the plan for surgery changed, they just simply didn’t prepare for the surgery before putting her under. They also gave her vaccines during her surgery that were not discussed with me prior. I am not against vaccinations, I am upset that she received vaccines and I was charged for them without my knowledge. Staff made rude comments, don’t get me wrong, I was visibly upset myself and not the kindest but attempted to be as considerate as possible when I brought these concerns to there attention and was met with very poor customer service. Here is the whole story if you want more details on how I was charged for services received I didn’t agree to: My dog needed one surgery for two procedures. I was given an estimate for $560- $635 and signed the understanding of this estimate. When I went to pick up my dog, I was told surgery went well and the cost was $627. Since this was in the range of the estimate, I paid without reviewing an invoice, not that the invoice was offered at time of payment anyways. After I paid, I waited for my dog to be brought out. Someone came out of the back and told me they were unable to do one procedure but the other was done. She said they tried to call me about it earlier, and “as a courtesy” wouldn’t charge me for the procedure that had not been done. I told her I had no missed calls. She then said, actually your dog was already under anesthesia when we noticed we didn’t have the supplies we needed for the second procedure so we just did the one. I told her I was concerned about my bill, I paid $627 which was the higher end of the quote so I don’t think they charged me right if they took off the second procedures cost. I asked for a copy of my estimate and an invoice of what I was charged. I noticed on the invoice that I was charged for a vaccine that was not discussed with me. She said it was on my estimate, which don’t get me wrong, was on the copy of my estimate I signed but was handwritten on it when everything else quoted was typed. I genuinely believe someone wrote it on there after I signed because a vaccine was never discussed, and the price of the vaccine was not figured into the total cost estimate. I was also charged $25 more for the surgery than what quoted so these two additions made up for the cost of the second procedure. That’s why I didn’t notice when I paid. They said the business manager was out of the office, I could wait or she’d call me. Knowing that vet techs and receptionist likely can’t resolve this issue, I didn’t argue anything with them. Tried to stay considerate and told them, I just want my dog so I can leave, she could call me later. When they finally brought me my dog, she didn’t have a cone. Which I asked prior to the surgery if I needed to bring one or not and they said they would provide one for free. I asked the tech if she had a cone and she said “The vet didn’t mention it.” And seemed unwilling to help. At this point, I was very frustrated and this was something that the vet tech COULD help me with, so I let out a comment of “I guess she’ll just pick at her incision the ride home.” In which she responded “That’s just uncalled for, you need to get out of here.”

Today my dog had his first appointment, he was prescribed an allergy shot, once a month. I was blown away when within just a hour or 2 the sneezing, the licking, and the scratching completely stopped. The staff is wonderful, very friendly, from the time we got there til the time we saw the Vet was only a few mins, which was great. The Vet is super nice and makes sure you understand everything she tells you and knows how much any referred procedure will be. The best part is I wasn't made to feel bad because I couldn't start a treatment for a bit. I did quote a bit of research to choose the right Vet and I think I did here.

I love how the Vets get right on the floor with my 100 lb Black Russian Terrier and are so calm! Kala likes seeing them and is always happy when we pull up here! I'm impressed that their fees are reasonable and the staff is kind! I have PTSD and the staff is wonderful whenever we go which helps me immensely!!
