How to Save Money at Gage Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I moved my dogs away from Gage Animal hospital a while back because the appeared to be only about money. I was looking at getting my dogs boarded (elsewhere) but they assumed I wanted to go through them and something caught my eye abiut their estimate. They wanted me to pay in advance for flee and tick medicine as it was "policy" to board dogs, but it struck me that unless I bought the medicine from them and had them administer it, there was no other way they could confirm this was being followed (I could buy the same over the counter meds on Amazon and give them to my dogs myself). I'm not opposed to flea and tick medicine in any way, Im opposed to telling people they have to do something when the only way to ensure their "policy" was being met was to buy it through them st their prices. Might not have been intended that way but it came off as a scam and I moved my dogs elsewhere!

Unfortunately the negligence of one of the newer Veterinarians at this practice resulted in the passing of my beloved dog. This occurred roughly 2 years ago right after Dr. Shipman stopped practicing and sold his practice. Mistakes were made by this DVM but could have avoided had this individual treated my dog correctly the first time. Dr. Shipman himself found out what had happened and personally called me to sincerely apologize for the mistakes of the veterinarian he trusted with his practice. The Emergency Animal Clinic of Topeka also has same owners as this practice so beware when this practice makes a detrimental mistake leading you to have to find Emergency Animal Care you would be much better off heading to K-State.

Not the same experience I would have received when Dr. Shipman was still with us. We would usually spend the first 20 minutes talking about Maine and how much we both loved Bar Harbor. Now the first 30 minutes is a sales pitch. Kinda like a a car dealership. The hardest pill to swallow was paying nearly 900 dollars for just an annual some tick meds and a bath! Now in their defense my dog needed to sedation but 900 dollars. That is extreme anyway you look at it. Dr. Shipman would spend the whole time talking to me. The new vet spent maybe 5 minutes. My rating is based on a ratio of cost care and staff interaction and genuineil interest in me and my beloved dog. I have no doubt my baby received good care but the whole experience wasn't even in the same ball park as compared to when our beloved Dr. Shipman was with us. My advice to the current owners. Life is not all about money. I work for the state and find more enjoyment in serving the needs of my fellow citizens then in the size of my paycheck. Remember service and memories will last well past death. Money not so. I will be searching for a vet who has come to this realization.

1st visit today! I have 3 very active dogs that often get injured. My Millie tore her shoulder pretty bad and needed medical attention. I have a hard time getting in with my current vet, they couldn’t see her today. I 1st went to Stonehouse, they are closed on Mondays but referred me to Gage. Gage was booked today as well. Apparently the wonderful receptionist spoke with the doc, called me back and they wanted to see her. We headed over and Paige Bloom promptly got her into surgery. The staff was wonderful! They explained everything, gave me options and went over the individual cost of everything for the procedure. She was hurting and ready to go home but I could tell they treated her with love. She has 2 follow up appointments scheduled and I will be returning with my other dogs.

I've been bringing my two dogs here for the past 3 months or so. One of my dogs suddenly got very sick and they've been so wonderful in helping us help him. All of the vets have been super sweet and have been patient with my reactive dog(he doesn't like strangers very much). All in all, I would trust these guys to take care of any animal you bring their way!
