How to Save Money at Fur Family Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dog Maggie loves fur family. All of the staff are wonderful, and Dr. McKeage is amazing. They are great at communicating and speedy at responding to email. Maggie used to be terrified of going to the vets but now she walks right into the office no problem. We had a mass removed from her shoulder this morning and Dr. McKeage called me after they were finished and reassured me that everything went great. They even sent me a picture of her which made my day.

Took both of my cats 🐈 as new patients and I must say I'm impressed. Even though one cat had a few sticks due to her veins rolling she never lashed out. No claws and no bites. Staff is amazing 👏 and you can feel their passion ❤️ I'm happy to have a clinic that knows how to work with cats.

I will FOREVER recommend this vet to everyone. They prioritize the care and comfort of a pet over anything else. My shy cat only likes being in her carrier and they adapted and did most of her exam while she was in her carrier. I appreciate a place that cares so deeply about an animal that they are willing to do their work where my animal feels the most comfortable. My other cat was very social and explored the place, instead of placing him on a table to keep him still, they followed him around and did their exam based off of where he went. I have never been so thankful for a place that prioritizes the comfort of animals over anything else. This vet is really the best in town! Every employee that works here is so incredibly pleasant. I was so amazed at how they treated both of my cats. ETA: I have never met a more cat friendly practice. I’ve been to many vets in manhattan (i grew up here which has let me to encounter many vets in the area) and this place is the BEST to take your cats to. The staff members i encountered were so kind with my cats it’s why i will never ever go to another vet again… if you’re looking for a place to treat your cats with the most grace and respect, this is the place to go to!

We have visited here since moving to Manhattan. Everything was fine until we showed up with our two dogs for their vet visit. We were reviewing their treatment plan and pricing when they told me they would get the kennel cough vaccine. I explained the kennel cough vaccines weren’t needed since we never board our dogs. This isn’t my first rodeo we have 6. Once we went over the treatment plan the total amount for our dog (who only receives yearly vaccines) was $165.00 I explained that I wasn’t okay with their prices and that I would take my dogs to the Deep Wells Vet because it was more cost efficient. They then told me that I would have to pay a $50 cancellation fee. I told them that I feel trapped and that I can either accept their services or pay a fee. I asked to speak to someone else. The vet tech then told me “I want your pups taken care of regardless of price” I was extremely offended as she made it seem like we weren’t going to take care of our animals. I explained we take care of our animals just not for your prices. Another tech tech came in after she left and said the doctor agreed if we service one dog we would only have a cancellation fee for our other dog of $25 dollars. I read their policy to them and said we didn’t cancel and we weren’t a no call no show as their policy states. I told her we were leaving. She said well let me go consult with the doctor. I stated for what? I will call and speak to the manger tomorrow about the fee but otherwise we are leaving and you can mail me a bill. She said well there isn’t anything we can do about keeping you here and we left. Calling the manager tomorrow.

We take our current dog and last dog here. They are great. And they caught cancer in our last dog when a previous vet clinic did not. Moved to this vet permanently and they have been super helpful whether it's an appointment or a phone call.
