How to Save Money at Bluestem Veterinary Service
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Dunlop was the nicest guy ever . He took good care of my Ms Kitty . Called to keep me up on treatment and called after I brought her home to make sure she was doing OK . The staff are very kind . Highly recommend this vet .

If I could give zero stars I would. My pitbull ate mouse poison on the 28th, the vet on call advised us to get him to purge then called back three hours later to tell us he forgot to tell us to use peroxide to get him to purge. Once he purged despite the amount consumed the vet was adamant that he didn't need to be seen. Fast forward 10 days my dog is lethargic, breathing shallow, vomiting blood, loss of appetite etc. The response is well he needs round the clock care take him to kstate. Kstate refuses to see him until emergency hours. 14 hours later my pet dies in my arms. I call in the following day to have my remaining dog recieve a checkup and am told I need to remain with the vet that I have been using. Mind you my dogs don't have a vet here as they have only been seen for shots.i tell themselves this and they tell me well you should use the vet that you are using for the cremation. Why because I don't have over 300 dollars to cremate my dog and chose one that was 100, yall know you use the same service for it right?

Doc saved our beloved family pet "Shadow" 23 yrs ago when he was first getting started, and just this week, all these years later, Doc saved our current family dog. "Tripp" was in surgery for over 2 hours. It was a complicated surgery and so much could have gone wrong! In moments like that, I want a vet who is good, but also one who cares about our family! Those are the vets that go the extra mile!! We thank God for Doc Meyer and his family!! We love our pets so much! They are a family member! When you love that much you only trust the best!!!

I've used bluestem for previous services like vaccinations and spaying and never had any issues. The staff is very polite and friendly and they can get you in quickly. My last few visits started on a Friday when my cat stopped eating and drinking and drooling excessively that was foul smelling, acting lethargic, and barely moving. They were able to get me in that afternoon. During examination I expressed her symptoms. The vet found she had a 104 degree fever. She is a difficult cat and he was unable to get a look in her mouth so he gave her a 2 shots and sent her home with antibiotics and said if she isn't better in a few days bring her back so he can do a dental exam which would require sedation. By Sunday my cat was doing much worse, still not eating or drinking or moving and her drool was beginning to smell much worse to where I was willing to pay the emergency visit fee because it was so concerning. This was 3 days no food or water. We took her in about 7 p.m that night. The vet examined her and said she wasn't that dehydrated and her fever wasn't as high and he would give her a antibiotic shot and check her in the morning. The next day he did the dental exam and said she had an ulcer on her tongue. He sent home more antibiotics and 3 days of pain medicine. This was over 700 for both visits. I understand vets are expensive and I was willing to pay that amount but I feel like more should have been done for my cat who I was saying is clearly very unwell. She did not recieve fluids at all during this. My cat continually got worse and still wasn't eating and drinking. I was having to syringe water just to get something in her. I couldn't afford to get a second opinion after the first 2 visits at blue stem. Day 13 my cat still hasn't ate or drank and was extremely lethargic, couldn't use her litter box, and could barely walk. I looked at her in the eyes and knew she was ready to go. I made the appointment at a different local vet and had to end my cat I had for 8 years suffering. Something was seriously wrong with my cat and I feel there wasn't enough knowledge to know the severity of the situation.
