How to Save Money at Southgate Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

this place is truly amazing. I called one day, and they were all booked up. I explained to them my situation, and they fit me right in the schedule for that same day. the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. when I got there, they gave me an extra blanket for my hedgehog that was being euthanized. a couple weeks later I received a handwritten letter, signed by all the staff with their condolences. I cannot recommend this place enough. they have the best prices around, with wonderful service, and great staff! thank you, Southgate!

Absolutely great place. A little pricey for the area but it’s for the comfort of your pet. The staff are so kind and helpful will do all they can for your pet. Note they main vet won’t sugar coat if there is nothing he can do he’ll be straight out with you, he never forces you in to anything but he will be honest.

I've been taking my animals and local strays to Southgate for 5 years now. Our first time with them was when our rottie had passed at home and they came to pick up her body. They've done 5 cremations/euthanizations over the years for me and each one of my beloved babes has been treated with respect and I've always been given the room to take as much time as I need. I have been fully satisfied and impressed with each little wooden box I've gotten back. The boxes are beautiful, the paw prints are done well, and they work with you for any other keepsakes or tufts of fur or anything you may want. I've had all of my animals cremated in special blankets and I feel that my wishes and needs during such difficult times are always respected. All of the doctors are amazing. They're all very compassionate and very knowledgeable. The rest of the staff is also fantastic. I've even worked with the Humane Society to have strays fixed, and Southgate has been so kind to the strays as well. I've also taken 2 strays in for treatment/antibiotics and they even gave me a bit of a discount on out of pocket expenses for the strays. Their entire facility is also always very clean. They've been amazing with my current boxer who has some behavioural issues. There's never been an issue getting her medications or even with dropping in to pick up flea/tick meds or whatever else we need for everyone. I've even walked in very close to closing with an emergency and they were so patient and didn't make me feel like an inconvenience for keeping them a bit later. I'm fortunate and so very grateful to have such an amazing team for my animals' healthcare. 1000% recommend.

I would've gave 1 star but our animals do get good care. On the other hand, the lady who treated sissy and Lou Lou today, acted like our presence disgusted her. She was very rude. When she was done with our pets my wife said, thank you, have a good day. She just turned her head and walked out. I think she was trying to tell us to go somewhere else for our pets needs. That's fine, you don't have to draw us a picture to get your point across.
