How to Save Money at U-Vet Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve seen these folks more than any pet parent would like in recent weeks. Everyone I spoke to was kind and patient with us. I saw Dr. Yu first, and my kitty has never handled vaccinations better - we even did three in a row. Later, they worked to get us in the same day when we had an emergency, and while Dr. Yu was away we were seen by Dr. Turpen, who was amazing while I was lowkey in panic mode. She spent probably too much time humoring my questions but she never treated us like she was watching the clock. Punkin is feeling much better now! We are thankful to the entire staff for their hard work!

Took my elderly, sick cat to this vet practice as patron at pet store raved about their care. Yes! This veterinarian business does care about each animal in their care & try many ways to help the pet to get well, feel better, & provide humane treatment throughout the pet's life span no matter how long that may be. I was impressed with their constant humane treatment of my elderly cat even when it was time to help my cat to"cross over". FINALLY, a vet practice seeing each life as that & not a $ sign!!!!

They are the most friendly and respectful vet office we've been too. My dog is not much of a people person. The Vet and the Tech both respected that and gently let her warm up to them with treats. Not only that, they kept her calm and didn't muzzle her. Which for me, it a BIG PLUS. So we now have a favorite place/Vet. The lady's up front were super sweet and friendly too.

We recently moved to Evansville from out of state so I needed to find a new vet. It is extremely hard to find vets here that are accepting new patients. So I was happy that U-vet had fairly good reviews and was accepting new patients. My first visit was - mixed. Good: Dr. Yu was very personable and did a pretty good job of explaining everything. On both visits (see below for why I had to go back), the vet techs were fantastic with my very anxious girl. Not so Good: My appointment was at 10:10. I didn’t see any tech or Dr until after 10:45 when the tech came in. After he got initial info and left, it was another 15 - 20 minutes before he returned with Dr. Yu. Admittedly my previous vet’s records were a bit hard to decipher. However, I explained that she’d had all of her last vaccines a year ago and now needed ALL vaccines again. I was very clear that since she’s in daycare and other contact with other dogs I wanted to make sure she got bordatella, distemper, and flu in addition to rabies. I guess I should have paid more attention to what they were giving her. When I got home I realized she had not gotten distemper and flu shots. I also realized they forgot to give me the stool sample collection container that Dr. Yu had said they’d give me. I take some responsibility in not checking more carefully, but I was dealing with a super anxious dog. When I contacted them, they did agree to let me come back to get the needed vaccines and to not charge another office visit fee. Also, the front desk people who checked me in on both occasions were very nice and seemed to understand my concerns fairly well. The woman who checked me out both times was…well not so great. She barely spoke at all, only gave one word answers to my questions, barely even looked at me and didn’t give any sort of information or instructions with the meds and paperwork she gave me. Hopefully this will all improve now that we’re past the initial visit and they have their own records. If so, I’ll update my review. Update: Once again I waited an extremely long time. Our appt was at 9:20 and we were finally taken to an exam room at 10:30. And then, after thoroughly explaining my concerns to both the tech and the vet - that she’s exercising more and eating less and still not losing weight - I get told to feed her less and exercise her more. I told them that every time I’ve been there they have completely ignored my requests and concerns. So I spent over 2 hours there for them to tell me to do what I already told them isn’t working! The vet techs have all been great. Dr. Yu either doesn’t hear my concerns or doesn’t think they are valid 😡

I've been going to U-Vet for a few years now following Dr. Turpin around. Every time they've been nice to me and my dog. My last experience there was a bit embarrassing as my dog started her heat in office. Yes, they can be pricey but honestly I've never had someone humor all my anxious questions, print me out over 14 pages of training guidelines at no cost, and treat an animal so well my dog actually gets excited when I say the word vet. I recommend them to literally everyone who mentions needing a vet.
