How to Save Money at VCA Lafayette Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Never been here, but called in a little panic over my kitty and his concerning bowel movements. The person who answered was very comforting and reassuring until my vet opened the next day. ✨️ my best friend takes her dogs here and she loves it.

I went to get my dogs medicine and Gabriella B would not listen to what I was saying when picking up my dogs medicine she was too busy talking to the other girls in the office. I continue to tell her it was my daughters bill and she brought my dog in and I paid that fee and She still continues say I owe the bill on my dog and in reality it was my daughter’s dog. They only looked at him for a second and prescribe him medication. I was told by groomer not to bring my dog there but gave the benefit of doubt.

Ever since Dr. Phlum retired we have tried to be patient. I figured it would take a while to get a decent vet in there again, but there have been a parade of new vets every time we go in there for the last five years or more. This visit was the worst ever, we spent five hundred dollars and they told us that they had to run yet another urine test. We suspected she had a urinary tract infection. She was running a fever, having accidents and vomiting occasionally. They apparently didn’t even test her for that because they had to do it a second time. They told us that would be a 90 more dollar charge. When we got there we asked for more of the anti vomiting medication and they said we needed another doctor’s appointment. I refused to pay for another doctor’s visit. Then, they tried to charge 137 dollars for the urine test that they said would be 90. I am done with this place. They cost way too much, and the service is terrible. The vet should have known to test for a UTI the first time, they tried to make us come back later for the doctors visit, despite the fact that they we had to give our dog antianxity meds before she came because she peed on the floor the first time and they couldn’t get any urine. Coming back later would have let the anxiety meds wear off and she would have peed everywhere again and they wouldn’t have been able to get any urine a second time. The tech that came to get the dog for her test was completely useless. She could see that the dog was hiding under the table and chairs and was unconcerned and told us to put a muzzle on her which was completely unnecessary. Then the tech tried to schedule us to come back, instead of taking the dog for her urine test which was the whole reason that we were there. We should not have had to pay the doctor a second time. That is just ridiculous. We will be looking for another vet from now on. Oh, and as an added bonus, when we walked in I heard the receptionist on the phone telling someone that they always get everyone else’s clients because they are so easy to get into! When Doctor Phlum was there the place was full of people waiting. Now the waiting room is generally empty. Go figure. We knew that their charges were high when Dr. Phlum was there but we paid it because our dogs got good care. Now we are expected to pay exorbitant rates for poor quality of care! We won’t be back.
