How to Save Money at VCA Swengel Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Apollo, my fur baby, has been coming here since he was 8 weeks old. Although I was told I should search for bulldog specific vets we feel he receives excellent care here and see no reason to look further. His vet is DVM Haithcox and she is kind and knowledgeable of his breed. The vet techs are stellar. We find the puppycare plan well worth it for the value and peace of mind. I recommend this facility.

Could not be more happy. Had a sick cat and started calling this morning. Called 4 other vet offices on INDPLS Southside. All 4 asked are you a current client. 3 said next avail appt were in Jan. One said Feb. But VCA is more like the vet offices I remember. They got our baby in same day (thanks to a cancelation) worked with me, were super friendly, and have earned a new life-long client. Thanks to all the great people at VCA Swengel A.H.

It hurts to have to write this... For 15 years this was our trusted vet. Dr.Swengle, Dr. K, and Dr. V were amazing vets, now they have a new vet who simply does not care about the health of our pets. She is completely concerned about herself and wouldn't answer any questions about our pets health. She continually talked about herself and the 'board' instead of answering our questions. Michelle and April are great, we will really miss them. The new vet, Dr. Herr, is a cold, heartless, un-caring person who should not be working with pets or people. Due to being taken off her medication she is harming herself again. The attached picture shows what you are putting our pet through and also conveys what I think of Dr. Herr

Very disappointed with this practice, and myself. Brought my cat in to be seen and they did some bloodwork. Was told on Monday, Sept 25th that my cat was diabetic and we needed to set up a follow up appointment for education and to start treatment. I offered up that I had the next day, Tuesday available, and my next day off would be Friday. I was told that Friday was fine since his other tests were ok. We noticed a change on Tuesday and called the vet. They told us to try the specialty food they were planning on prescribing. Over the course of this week, we called the vet on at least 4 occasions expressing our concerns over my cat deteriorating. We were assured that the Friday appointment was fine. My cat passed 7 hours before his appointment time. I was pissed and distraught. When the vet called and offered to review the case with me, I thought perhaps they cared and miscommunication/mistakes occurred, I called them back to say I would like that review. I called back on Tuesday to remind them once again that I wanted this case review, and they could not even find me in their system. Once I started to tell my story, they "found" me again and relayed they would pass the message on to call me as soon as possible. Well it is now two full days later and still no call back. My mind has cleared, and I am no longer delusional that this was some unfortunate misunderstanding. They just don't give a damn about you or your pets.

The staff here are exceptional, they follow-up well and I love the option to text. Best vet office on the south side, imho.
