How to Save Money at Healthy Paws Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 10-year-old cat Gus had his first appointment at Healthy Paws this morning. While we aren’t excited about his diagnosis, we were both pleased by the professionalism and friendliness of the staff and the level of care he received. I made the appointment earlier this week, and they were able to get Gus in right away with a time that worked with my schedule. I also liked that they requested his previous vets’ information so that they could go ahead and get his records. We arrived about 15 minutes early to his appointment (I wasn’t sure if there would be anything I needed to fill out), and they got him into a room right away and he didn’t have to be stressed about being around other animals. The vet and tech were clear about what tests were needed and how much each would cost, and I was asked what I felt comfortable doing today (I went ahead and did it all). I didn’t feel any pressure from them, which I really appreciated. The testing wasn’t fun for Gus, but they were great with him and he loved the Churu! The vet did an excellent job delivering the diagnosis and going over the next steps, and she explained all the medical stuff at my non-medically trained level. Part of Gus’ treatment includes switching to a prescription diet, and they sent us home with a week’s worth of food to get Gus started until I get his food ordered. Another part of his plan is to get an ultrasound, and they called me less than an hour after we left to get it scheduled for next week. Again, we aren’t happy about his diagnosis, but we are grateful to have caught it so early and that we have Healthy Paws to partner with in his care.

The vets and their staff are currently saving my dog's life. They are knowledgeable, patient and kind. My questions and concerns are answered in a very timely fashion and with respect. Heart Worm is a horrible thing to put a dog through. Always give your dog the medication that protects them from this parasite. Our good boy is a rescue and was found to have this disease this last spring. I have every hope he will pull through.

I went to schedule an appointment for an annual wellness and was told that my dog must be sedated. When asked what the miscommunication was as we had talked about non-sedation after my dog's last negative experience with it, the only response was "for our safety." I asked why they requested her muzzle to not be worn if they felt unsafe with her (which was news to me considering the love she was receiving prior), there was no response. To be clear, I have no problem with the muzzle but am giving this information to share that sedation came out of left field. We've had many vet visits without sedation (and sedated), and my dog has had adverse reactions later to every sedation. As she gets older, these reactions are lasting longer and the pain she experiences is as well - she gets horrendous IBS and vomiting after sedation, the last lasting over 1.5 weeks. Additionally, she has been brought to my car covered in her own feces and urine and only one staff member has offered to help me load my (very upsetting looking) best friend into my car as they rushed her out as soon as possible. Besides the fact that this is already a book, their prices are worth the service provided when provided well. Our only fight has been over how horrible my dog looks and feels after sedation when sedation is not necessary, but I wholeheartedly trust both vets experience and the price comments are rather silly. So TLDR; I think this place is great with cats and small to medium dogs. But please beware if you have a large dog as it seems that they're quite fearful of large dogs that have anxiety. And just a note - I've noticed that every negative post is followed by a response sharing vet records and personal info on the animal. If you'd like to speak further - you have my number and would appreciate that. Sophia will deeply miss HP.

Very caring and friendly staff. Beautiful and clean clinic. Appointments are flexible and they are very thorough. Just wish they did more to obtain more current treatments. We have had to drive to Columbus to a more experienced and advanced vet for a two illnesses our puppy was dealing with. The clinic and clients would benefit from additional training and seeking out seminars to improve treatment options offered.
