How to Save Money at Akron Vet Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I am writing this review even though I don't live in the area. Also, I am biased. But you should read it anyway. 1. Dr. Howard has loved animals all his life, from gerbils to cows and everything in between. I know this because I am his sister. 2. Dr. Howard talks slow but thinks fast. Talking slow is a result of having grown up in Texas, but thinking fast is what makes him a good vet. Before you can ask a question, he has already thought about it, considered all the various scenarios, and come up with a solution. 3. Dr. Howard is practical. He doesn't want anyone to suffer -- either his patients or their people. Therefore, he advocates for routine vaccinations, year-round flea and tick treatments, regular teeth cleaning and annual well-pet visits. He knows that keeping an animal healthy and happy is better -- and usually less expensive -- than emergency care. 4. Dr. Howard is patient. He will answer all of your questions, often with more detail than some people want. If you don't want all the details, just tell him. But don't be surprised if he tells you anyway. Dr. Howard knows that pets can't talk, and people must speak for them. He wants you to know as much about your animal as he does because that promotes their health and longevity. Plus, he hates euthanizing your pet as much as you do. I know this is a long review, and thank you for taking time to read it. Even though I live in Houston and have access to some great vets here, I still call Dr. Howard whenever I have a question. So far my local vet has always given the same advice that Doc gives, but I know Bill will understand my concerns and help me reach the right decision. That's a pretty nice thing to be able to say about your little brother!

I took my pet rat here two years ago when he had an upper respiratory infection. Unfortunately he passed away while I was there with him. The doctor was so so nice to me and explained everything very well. The entire staff tried their hardest and did everything they could have done for us. I wouldn’t take my small animals to any other vet. The entire staff is so compassionate and I was so thankful for them.

We recently moved to the area, and were looking for a local veterinarian. We happily found Akron Veterinary Clinic! We had some on going health issues with our puppy, and Dr.Howard and his staff went above and beyond to try and help her. Unfortunately, our puppy did past, on a Sunday morning Emergency Vet visit to see Dr. Howard. It was such a shock, they worked with us to find the cause of death, which turned out to be caused by our previous Vet. Everyone at Akron Veterinary Clinic has been incredibly kind, and helpful, from the first time we walked in the doors. They are under staffed right now, like so many other places in the world, but they do their best to care for their patients in a timely manner. Dr.Howard genuinely loves his patients and is extremely good at explaining things fully and making sure your questions are answered. I’m very grateful for Dr.Howard and his staff, for not only the wonderful care he has given my other pets but also his compassion he showed us as we lost our puppy. If you want a veterinarian who will care for your animals like his own, this is the place to be.

We have been clients with Akron Vet Clinic for 9 years. Doc and Tammy have always gone above and beyond to accommodate us! Even at very inconvenient times. Doc takes so much time explaining and going over everything so that we understand what is going on so so knowledgeable!!!! Prior to them being our vet I had some less than desirable encounters with another local vet!! Doc truly cares for his patients and clients!!! Thank you Akron vet clinic for the amazing care you give to our fur babies year after year!!!!! You guys are the best!!!!!!!

Dr. Bill Howard and staff are wonderful to work with. We have been going to see them since 2008. We had a rat terrier that we had taken to several vets due to her constant itching.. all the other vet just wanted to give a shot and move on. Dr. Howard ran the blood screen and we located exactly what she was allergic to and dealt with the cause of the problem. We are now on our 3rd rattle and would not even think of going anywhere else. Dr. Howard, Tammy and staff care about our fur babies.
