How to Save Money at Christensen Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat needed a cryptorchidectomy (surgery for an undescended testicle). I researched having it done laparoscopically and I came across Dr Moll and his extensive experience with laparoscopic surgery on the internet. After our initial consultation with Dr. Moll, I felt totally confident about having the procedure done here. Dr Moll took a lot of time explaining the entire procedure and what I should be expecting. He is very caring, patient, and extremely knowledgeable! The entire staff was kind and helped put me at ease. I actually can't say enough good things about my experience at this clinic and especially with Dr. Moll!

I recently brought my Golden Retriever there on very short notice. They were able to get her looked at and did all the necessary work. They were responsive with the many questions I had and easy to work with. I definitely trust them to care for my dog and highly recommend them.

Today I came here for a consult and a first time appointment for a front declaw for my cat, Wrigley. Instead of having the surgery, Dr. Moll recommended that I get nail caps for her. As of May 2023, Vets are no longer able to perform recalls unless absolutely necessary. Dr. Moll said Illinois and California are the only states that have this law. I appreciated his honesty and explanation. I bought the nail caps and so far it has been successful this evening. I wish I discovered these a long time ago, because I would have not gotten the declaw in the past for my other cats. Thanks for saving me $ and your honesty. Plus, thank you Joey for cutting Wrigley's nails this morning. You were very warm and friendly, and I think she was at ease with you! I have now switched all of my cats to them for future appointments.

I can’t thank Dr. Moll and his entire team enough for the unbelievable experience during our puppy’s recent spay procedure. We chose this practice for the unique laporoscopic technique the doctor employs to minimize pain and recovery for our pup. The attentiveness and thoroughness of Dr. Moll exceeded any and all expectations! From the day he met Teddi to the day of the procedure, the care provided to our dog is something a human would envy. The doctor had an appointment to establish the relationship with us and spent at least 30 minutes patiently explaining every nuance. We followed up with detailed bloodwork to ensure anesthesia and procedure would be safe. On the day of the procedure, we were informed of every step and had confidence our baby was in good hands. When she was discharged, the doctor spent another 30 minutes reviewing all the details, from post-surgical expectations to nutritional advice. The technicians and office staff truly cared for the puppy and even followed up with an email the morning after the surgery to ensure Teddi was doing well after the procedure. The minimally invasive laporoscopic technique ensures our dog was literally back to normal the following day… two tiny holes were glued (no big incision, no visible stitches, no cone - just a cute surgical suit recommended by the doctor). By contrast, my sister-in-law took 3 days off from work (+weekend) had to carry her puppy in her arms to relieve her discomfort after a traditional spay. From the financial perspective, the office gave us the range for an estimated procedure cost and ended up charging on the lower end… which further proves that they truly care about animals and their well-being above all. THANK YOU! I’m grateful I discovered your amazing practice.

I chose Christiansen Animal Hospital for my mini goldendoodle’s spay procedure because they offer laser laprascopic ovariectomy (leaving the uterus in place), which research indicated would offer the fastest recovery. It absolutely was the best choice! If I had known that my dear girl would feel better so fast, I could have saved myself a lot of worry. She has IBD, so seeing her eating, drinking, and pottying well from the very first evening was a big relief. Her two incisions are tiny and healing well. She showed no signs of discomfort after the first recovery day. I highly recommend this surgical method and these vets to anyone who wants the best possible spay experience for their dog.
