How to Save Money at Healthy Paws Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have been seeing the Healthy Paws team for 5+ yrs and they are absolutely wonderful. Excellent communication and follow-up. The doctors and staff truly care about my pup. And perhaps most importantly, they provide through care. We saw 2 other local vets that seemed FINE -- and as new dog owners we didn't know what GREAT vet care looked like. Once we found healthy paws, our eyes were opened to what outstanding care looks like. We are grateful and highly recommend healthy paws.

If you don’t want to read my long review just know this - both my dog and I left Healthy Paws with ZERO STRESS! I’m actually looking forward to our next vet visit! I am completely at ease knowing I finally found the perfect vet ❤️ Our visit to Healthy Paws was a 10 star experience all around! I was looking for a new vet and I wanted someone exceptional - I am beyond impressed with Dr. Burgess and her staff. Dr. Burgess is exceptionally smart and took her time to explain all my options regarding my dog’s health as well as answering my many questions. Her communication skills are unmatched, and I really admired her attention to detail. She is well-spoken, extremely knowledgeable, and helped me come up for a great care plan for my dog. Even though we have some (expensive) homework (ophthalmologist and cardiologist recommendations) I was aware of the complications my dogs could have when I chose the breed I did, it’s a cost I expected and the price is not the vets fault! (I feel any negative reviews I’ve seen are from people who didn’t follow up with care in a timely manner resulting in additional blood work needing to be done which gets sent out to labs.. everyone has to get paid folks) Healthy Paws was extremely transparent with costs for services. Dr. Burgess and her staff let me see a mock up invoice prior to choosing which tests to do for my dog, and explained the benefits of the different tests I requested. When we left, we even got a personalized binder with a lot of great information for dog owners. The ambiance and cleanliness, along with the friendliness of the staff allows for a stress-free environment. The cherry on top is Dr. Burgess. You can tell she is not only passionate about animals, but a master at her craft. She is kind, smart, and humble, I absolutely loved talking with her! She is incredible to work with, and helped me make well-informed decisions for my dog (who I lovingly refer to as my first born son) I’m really looking forward to bringing my other dog in, she is more skittish because she is a rescue and I know she will be comfortable there. I cannot say enough good things about my experience with Healthy Paws, it was an absolute dream! Everyone was so lovely to work with, and I am so thankful to have found Dr. Burgess.

Dr Burgess and her team are all excellent. They have taken very good care of my dogs over the course of 6 years. She gave my dog another chance at life after he was diagnosed with cancer. After following her recommendations, my dog became cancer free and I had many more years with him. She has always been compassionate with my dogs. I'm very grateful to have them as our vet.

I initially was really pleased when switching to this vet as they were able to get my dog relief for a long term ear infection. However, it became clear they were in business to make a profit rather than help animals when I was told I needed to pay for more lab work before refilling an allergy medication my dog has been on for multiple years. My dog has been to two other vets who have prescribed this allergy medication without requesting “additional tests”. Definitely trying to squeeze every penny they can.
