How to Save Money at Elmhurst Animal Care Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I recently visited Elmhurst Animal Care Center not once, but twice during a challenging period for my beloved pet. My experience with this clinic has been nothing short of exceptional, and I am compelled to share my heartfelt review. In a time of crisis, it’s not always easy to find immediate care for your pet. My first encounter with this clinic happened when my dog needed urgent attention. I was referred to them because they take walk in appointments, which in a way, was a lifesaver for us, because I was so desperate to help my dog. It was evident from the start that the staff are also genuine animal lovers who understand the emotional bond between pets and their owners. During my first visit, the veterinarian exhibited a high level of expertise. They thoroughly examined my dog, explained a possible diagnosis, and treatment options clearly, and ensured I had all the information I needed. Unfortunately, a couple days later, my dog’s condition worsened, and we had to make the heart-wrenching decision to say goodbye. It was during this incredibly difficult moment that the clinic’s exceptional qualities truly shone. The veterinarian and their team handled the euthanasia process with utmost compassion and sensitivity. What touched me the most, was that the vet shed tears along with us. Their empathy and willingness to share in our grief, made the experience a bit more bearable. This clinic not only provided top notch medical care, but also offers something that is often hard to find in the world of veterinary medicine-genuine empathy. I’m not the kind of person that leaves reviews on every place I visit, but I felt like I needed to share this experience. If you made it this far in reading this, Thank you to the the staff and doctors at Elmhurst Animal Care center!

Five years ago, we adopted one of our dogs from the rescue organization associated with Elmhurst Animal Care Center (Mag Mutts). We've taken both of our dogs here ever since and have only had positive experiences. All of the staff are wonderful, and the facility is clean and spacious. One of our pups recently had TPLO surgery here. Dr. Nate Berg was truly exceptional, answering all of our concerns and easing our stress (and our pup's) along the way.

I’ve been bringing my furry friends here for years. I learned of this care center through a friend that does rescue work and often brings cats here. I’ve been coming here ever since. They are phenomenal with cats. Cat owners know how hard this can be to find. I have brought friendly ferals and my own cats here. I also brought my dog here back in 2019 (RIP old buddy) and they were just as amazing with my geriatric guy. They have the most consistent and reasonable prices of any vet I’ve ever gone to in the past. The care they give is very compassionate and thorough. I personally request Dr. Luth or (when she was there) Dr. Fae, though I am certain all vets here are great. The walk in system helps to alleviate a lot of stress, since pet owners can rarely plan when something may go wrong but you can also call for appointments for more routine needs like vaccinations and medication check ups. It always smells very clean and the front desk staff are very helpful. The vet techs are so sweet and thoughtful. We once had to put a friendly feral (from my colony) with a severe ailment to rest here and the techs made us feel as if they were losing a member of their own family. I will never forget their compassion. We used to live very close to this location but have since moved and I will still make the drive to come here with my cats because I know I will always get the same care, compassion and value every time I need to go. Thanks for all you do here!

My newly adopted cat needed urgent medical care but I could not find anywhere in or near Chicago that had availability before mid-late September. Elmhurst Animal Care Center accepts walk-ins and took us in, for that I am so thankful! The front desk staff and tech I met were very nice. Dr. Hari is also quite possibly the nicest and most wonderful vet I've ever encountered! She was so good with my cat, friendly with me, and explained things well! The prices were also very reasonable - I didn't get gouged here like you do in the city! Totally worth the drive in city traffic to get here. Thank you guys!!

Dr. Luth is by far the most compassionate and knowledgeable veterinarian I have ever met. She has helped 4 of my dogs and has the ability to make you feel at ease when dealing with a stressful time for your animal. I highly recommend the clinic overall - Lindsay and Stephanie at the front desk have always been so helpful and thorough - they make sure things are getting done - overall terrific staff and I highly recommend this vet!
