How to Save Money at West Loop Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Sheba is 7, and has began showing signs of aging, having dental issues and random symptoms. I haven't had a primary vet for her...until now!!! I arrived nervous, anxious and having a serious cloud of pet mom guilt hanging over my head. My throat is sore from holding back an avalanche of tears and my stomach in knots because I know this is about to cost me more than I have on hand. I'm greeted with smiles at front desk, I wait a short moment before being greeted by a smiling vet assistant in training (cannot recall her name) then taken to the exam room. The intake was personable, seamless and I was made to feel that I was in the right place with the right professionals. Any feelings of intimidation, inaccessibility or judgment went right out the window. They saw my love and concern for my pet, addressed all my questions, took their time with explaining process, diagnosis and medications suggested. I finally just burst into tears; more so from relief that Sheba has a medical team that will escort me through her wellness and recovery plan. Dr. Alexandra O Hannah B Front Desk staff Intake nurse Thank you for your support, patience, smiles and I look forward to seeing you twice a year with my fur babies

I will be honest -- the prices are not the cheapest that you can find. HOWEVER -- the quality of service + attention of care are far more worth it. I have been to many vets over my dog's 9 years of life. Some were expensive; some were cheap. However, I can tell that West Loop Vet legitimately care for animals. Coming from an abandoned family, my Dachshund shows a lot of fear: peeing, barking, shaking, etc. However, with her recent visit, I was able to see she did not show any of those symptoms and was so relaxed. WLC was able to see my dog less than 24 hours of inquiry and welcomed her with arms wide open. She ended up with only vaccinations, but they even followed up within 24 hours of her appointment. My dog's comfort is a priority to me -- we will be here permanently. Dr Ford was amazing!

I have only ever had positive interactions with everyone at West Loop Vet as a client for several years now. They truly care about you and your pet and they do their best to address needs as they arise. It is a bit on the pricier side but it is worth it for the service and quality of care.

West Loop Vet is the best! My kitten feels super comfortable here. He did not even notice when he was getting a vaccine. It is easy to make appointments. They offer appointments in the late evening for those that work during the day. Can’t recommend West Loop Vet enough.

We took our rescue dog here one week after we got him. As background — our dog is super sweet and would never hurt a fly. The trip was during Covid, so we were not allowed to go inside with him. When they brought our dog back out, he was terrified! I felt terrible for him. They told us they had put a muzzle on him, and then they recommended Xanax because our dog was so scared. The reason he was so scared is because he was new to the city and was at the vet for the first time, which I would think would be something a vet sees all the time and would expect them to know how to handle these stressful situations — not escalate them with a muzzle! My dog has never bit anyone or anything, nor has he threatened to! We have since taken our dog to different vets who always have raving reviews of how sweet and gentle he is. I think the West Loop vet potentially had a personal bias against my dog’s breed, and they weren’t able to properly handle his fear or read the situation. Such a shame. Needless to say we did not go back.
