How to Save Money at Boughton Square Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've seen people rating vet clinics for putting down their loved pets...I don't fall for that standard, emotional procedure.... I'm rating a clinic for really helping pets to live a good quality life for finding the right diagnosis and giving an effective treatment. That's what I experienced at this clinic.

I have brought my dog to this clinic multiple times over this past month, and there have been countless red flags that have caused me to seek care elsewhere. 1. Records are sloppy and inaccurate (had to call in to get them corrected since they omitted one of my dog's vaccinations that THEY administered making it appear like she still needed another dose. They also did not do an intake of my dog's old records and update their system). 2. Receptionists are highly disorganized. They had both my name and email spelled wrong in the system so I wasn't receiving emails. Furthers my first point of poor management of animal records. 3. When I've brought my dog in the last 2 visits, they've taken her to the back to perform care instead of doing it in the exam room where I can see everything they're doing. (Gives an impression that they have something to hide). Also did a poor job clipping her nails since one of her nails was bleeding, which fyi they charge $27. 4. Since taking my dog here she's had a change of behavior where she's now fearful of people (which makes me wonder how they handled her in the back since she was not like this prior to going to this clinic and is the only time someone else has had her with me not around). 5. Dr. Miller's diagnosis of my dog was that she COULD have kennel cough OR allergies, but he could not give me a definite answer. Prescribed an antibiotic and steroid. Quantity of steroid noted on the bottle did not match its contents, so I was shorted medication. 6. After a couple days of starting my dog on these medications, her symptoms got significantly worse. She was having more frequent cough episodes which caused me to worry. Spoke with Dr. Miller on the phone whose recommendation was to schedule her for an X-ray. He could not get her in until the following week. He attempted to end the call with me until I stopped him and asked "Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable in the meantime?" He answered yes, that he could prescribe another antibiotic and cough tablets. Why was this not proposed by him before he initiated ending the call??? Does not demonstrate much compassion or empathy of my dog's current state. 7. With my dog being suspected of having kennel cough, Dr. Miller and other clinic staff made no effort to quarantine her from the other animals. Kennel cough is highly contagious. Shows they don't have appropriate protocols in place for handling kennel cough, which I suspect she may have contracted it from the clinic in the first place after witnessing their loose practices around it. 8. The list goes on.... I've since gone to Harvester Vet Clinic in Burr Ridge, and I've received a complete 180 degree difference in quality and care. Do yourself a favor, save yourself the frustration and worry and don't take your pet here.

I just took my dog to his first appointment with Boughton Square. He is somewhat fearful of people which we are working on. I found the care team and vet to be very compassionate, patient, and friendly to my dog. They made things comfortable for him. They were really kind and helpful. I am so glad to have found a new vet.

Thank you for being so amazing! I highly recommend this clinic they are wonderful! The staff was great the vet was great ! They really did a great job at making sure my dog and myself were comfortable and answered all my questions and concerns. I have to say the facility is beautiful and well kept. The pricing is unbelievably affordable. I made a ton of calls searching for a vet and I finally found an affordable one. My dog means the world to me and I’m so thankful the team here loves all the animals that come in.

So thankful to have such a wonderful veterinary staff so close to home. They care for Buddy as if he were their own. When we unfortunately had to have surgery for a tumor removal Dr Pullins heard all my concerns and attended to each one. I went home from surgery with very clear instructions. Looking forward to a speedy recovery for my old man. Thank you again for everything!!!
