How to Save Money at Hawthorne Park Animal Care Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Every veterinarian here, tech and front desk workers have always been so kind. I’ve been taking my lab here since he was 6 weeks old and everyone has truly been so caring, understanding and patient with my questions. My dog loves coming to the vet, even when he’s sick! I used to be so anxious bringing him in because of how excited and jumpy he gets, but they make him feel so comfortable and give him lots of love! Highly recommend.

I recently had an incredible experience at Hawthorne Park Animal Care, where Dr. Kramer provided exceptional care for my beloved pet Coco during a crucial time. Coco needed an urgent C-section procedure, and Dr. Kramer's expertise and compassion made all the difference in bringing Coco's adorable baby boy, Baki, into this world safely. From the moment we arrived at the clinic, the staff at Hawthorne Park Animal Care demonstrated professionalism and a genuine love for animals. They made sure Coco and I felt welcomed, reassuring us that we were in capable hands. The clinic itself was clean, well-maintained, and had a soothing atmosphere, which helped alleviate any anxiety we had. Dr. Kramer's knowledge and skill were evident throughout the entire process. He took the time to explain the procedure to me in detail, addressing my concerns and making sure I felt comfortable with the upcoming surgery. His expertise and confidence were incredibly reassuring, and I knew Coco was in the best possible care. During the C-section, Dr. Kramer and his team displayed remarkable efficiency, ensuring Coco's safety while delivering her precious baby boy, Baki. The procedure went smoothly, and I couldn't have asked for a more positive outcome. Dr. Kramer's dedication and attention to detail were truly commendable. Post-surgery, Dr. Kramer's care didn't stop. He provided thorough aftercare instructions and ensured Coco was recovering well. Dr. Kramer's passion for his work was evident in the genuine concern he showed for Coco's well-being. He patiently answered all my questions and offered valuable advice to ensure Coco's complete recovery. It's also extremely important to note that post-surgery, my partner, my Coco, and I have no idea what we were doing. We were struggling and called in multiple times a day, almost every day for a week. The entire staff knew who I was at that point. Regardless, they were extremely helpful and efficient. The team gave the best advice and tapped Dr.Kramer whenever needed. The cost of the procedure was fairly priced but I raved to all of my family and friends because I wasn't only paying for a quick procedure by a vet and his techs. I paid for their time and energy pre-op, during op, and post-op. I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am to Dr. Kramer and the entire team at Hawthorne Park Animal Care. Their dedication, expertise, and compassion made a challenging and stressful time much easier for both Coco and me. Thanks to them, Coco and Baki are healthy, happy, and thriving. If you're looking for a veterinary clinic that combines top-notch medical care with a heartfelt approach, I wholeheartedly recommend Hawthorne Park Animal Care. Dr. Kramer and his team are true professionals who go above and beyond to provide exceptional service to their patients and their owners. They truly understand the importance of the human-animal bond and treat each pet as if they were their own. We brought in our daddy dog, Appa to get a wellness check and vaccines updated because we love the team! Thank you, Dr. Kramer, and the entire team at Hawthorne Park Animal Care, for your extraordinary care and for helping Coco and Baki through their remarkable journey. You have earned my trust and eternal gratitude. Here are some pictures from day 1 to three weeks (today)!

Frankie loved his first visit everyone treated us so well. He had a reaction to his puppy vaccines and they took him right back in a reacted quickly to reverse allergic reaction. When he hears the sound of my keys he now wants to go with me to go back to the vet.

I took one of our dogs here for the first time because our long-time country vet retired. The staff and veterinarian were all so friendly and caring. Everything was explained thoroughly, and I feel like our dog received excellent care. The pricing seemed reasonable, though certainly a little higher than what I was use to with our country vet (totally understandable considering the very nice facility and large staff.) The bill was detailed and itemized to explain exactly what we were paying for. They were able to see our dog very quickly—the same day I called, which was great. I’m happy with the decision and plan to continue to take our dogs to Hawthorne for care in the future.

This was our best vet visit of the last year! One of my dogs had TPLO surgery last June & the surgeon recommended hydrotherapy to help with his recovery. I was thrilled to find a vet in Bloomington that offered hydro. We started about 6 weeks after surgery, 2 times a week at first then weekly & it really helped his recovery. At this Last appointment we saw a different vet, same practice & he said he never would have known he had the surgery. The leg felt the same as his good one. I am so thankful we have a local vet that offers this service! I love all of the staff there & feel like we finally found a new vet home!
