How to Save Money at VCA Berwyn Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would recommend avoiding this clinic at all costs. While there were a few kind technicians there, the vet didn't fully listen to me and as such, my cat had to suffer a month longer than she probably should have. When I finally made the agonizing decision to put my cat down, the male technician working there was the least compassionate person I've ever met. When I paused on taking my cat to the back, he used it as an excuse to not do the job and then berated us about our decision to put our beloved cat down, saying her condition was "easily treatable". I took my cat to another place as soon as I was able, and they immediately told me way more information regarding my cat's health and conditions and recommended putting her down, with grace and mercy that day. Would give 0 stars if I could.

I have been a VCA customer for a number of years, and have had positive experiences (for the most part) with the veterinary care for my dog. I think every vet has positives and negatives, and VCA seemed to have more positives than negatives, so no major complaints over the years. Up until a recent incident of which I believe negligence and blame are at play. I was given a medication by a tech for and instructed to take it twice/day. She seemed in a hurry, so that was the extent of the instruction. Fast forward a couple days, I had left the medication in my purse as this medication was optional and I decided not to administer to my dog right away. When I pulled it out to give it to her, I see a sticker on the bottle that says “refrigerate.” Since I was given no instruction by this tech to refrigerate this medication and since I had delayed the administration of the medication, I called the next day to find out if it was still viable. Apparently the team at VCA had no idea, so they had to call out to another clinic to ask this question. The answer came back later in the day that the medication was no longer viable, and that I would have to purchase another $80 bottle of medicine at my own expense. I explained that this tech never disclosed the fact that the medication needed to go in the fridge, and I would never purposefully leave medication out if I had known it was to be refrigerated. I then asked to speak to a manager, and she reiterated the same message: that I would need to pay for this bottle out of my own pocket. And that they were “covered” since the label to refrigerate was on the bottle. I asked if their tech’s are trained to disclose this information, and she said 90% of the time they do disclose it. But in this case, she did not. And that they talked to the tech following the incident so that it wouldn’t happen again. And frankly she didn’t seem to care too much about doing the right thing. It is sad to me that they admitted this is “outside of their norm” with this tech not disclosing this information, and even then, they would not replace this bottle at their expense. I’ve seen bad customer service, but this was just egregious. It truly is mind boggling to me that they are willing to lose a patient over $80… I guess it paints a clear picture about their poor management as a business.

My time with the wonderful staff was during one of the worst days of my life, saying goodbye to my 18 year beautiful kitty Alley. I walked through the doors carrying her in my arms sobbing, they rushed over to me and took us to a room right away. They took my beautiful girl and confirmed what I knew, it was time to say goodbye forever to my sweet Alley. They let me have time alone with her before they took her back, it was horrible for the obvious reason but amazing because they were so loving and kind. They didn’t rush me, not even after I was done saying goodbye, they just let me get myself together and offered nothing but kind words and comfort. The prices were exactly what we discussed over the phone not even an hour before I got there, considering the emergency service it was cheaper than I had anticipated and they were perfectly accommodating. I think many forget that this is an emergency service location so they don’t anticipate possible wait times when they make appointments. For those who feel angry about time spent waiting while at appointments here, please try to remember the staff is giving your pet the treatments they need for a healthy life while simultaneously helping others like me who have to rush there and don’t get to leave with our beloved pets. They’re accommodating all sorts of needs, please remember this while reviewing- they are giving the best care possible in all circumstances. Thank you to everyone at the VCA Berwyn Animal Hospital, you made one of the hardest moments in my life far less painful, you are wonderful!

Wish I could give 0 stars. I brought my dog for vomiting and diarrhea and asked for treatment and bloodwork. I was told my dog couldn't be seen and to make an appt for another day. I can't believe they would take turn away a senior puppy who was clearly not well.

The staff at this animal hospital are great! Luna had a terrible cough, and I was able to call and get an appointment for the same day! All other vets had nothing for 2 weeks. Luna also got a great new patient kit, and they called me the next day to see how Luna was doing, which was appreciated!
