How to Save Money at Lake Shore Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It was time to put our old girl down. Dreading the thought, but it was time. Thank you to Katelin for making this transition a great experience. My girl was kept comfortable and we stayed with her until the end. They let us take as much time as we need to say our goodbyes and I love your. Thank you again. I can't tell you how much it meant to us.

Absolutely outstanding service and care!! My 12 year old lab mix needed emergency surgery and we were terrified both for her and for us financially. We've never been in a position with Ariel when she needed any kind of surgery let alone emergent. The cost of it all was also terrifying. We called all over town and Lake Shore was able to get her in AND save us well over $1000. They went over every step of the process throught surgery to ensure she was safe and we were comfortable. She's home resting and on the road to recovery. We Thank you and Ariel thanks you so much Lake Shore. Even though we are in Boise we will be bringing our pets to you for all our pet health needs!!

I've been using Lake Shore Animal Hospital for about 4 years now. They have been taking great care of 3 dogs and our cat. I have found them to be very caring and accommodating when I had a sick or injured pet. Even though they had a gull schedule they managed to fit us in. There pricing is very reasonable. I'll continue bringing my pet's here for as long as we live in the Nampa area.

Great place to take your animals. Katelyn is our vet. She has compassion in the care for animals. This place is extremely busy! The only downside is they need more Dr. It is sometimes hard to get an appointment.

We made an appt last week by phone and we were quoted $70 office visit, told we needed a parvo test before our dog could be seen. We informed them that as a newborn pup she had Parvo and received treatment, therefore we felt it was unnecessary. We were told we could not come there, unless we complied and paid the fee. So we agreed. We told them on the phone we wanted our dogs tested for parasites and a fecal test ran. My husband arrived today for a 10am, 15 mins early, and waited 45mins for someone to come out for the parvo test… He was charged an urgent care fee of $80 for one dog, $50 for the other. They did not allow my husband to go in the room with the dogs so that he could ask questions or inform the Dr of what has been happening with our pets. No decal test was done…Again, We informed the receptionist last week on the phone that we wanted them tested for worms. She told us we had to bring fresh fecal with us so that they could run that test when he arrived. My husband collected the samples this morning and took them fresh with him today. Not only did they not run the fecal, but we have no information as to what could potentially be wrong with our dogs. Definitely will not visit this vet again. Edit to respond: NO…. No additional testing was offered. We DID ask for it at the time the appointment was made by phone. If your staff isn’t qualified to notate or relay upon arrival AND when he asked, that’s not a breakdown on our side. Our dogs are still not well and now we have to wait for another appointment at another veterinary clinic AND pay another $200 for services after wasting $170 there. Ridiculous.
