How to Save Money at WestVet Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so grateful for these kind people for being just that, kind & caring as well as open on Sundays (I know, "urgent" care) BUT still. I brought my under 2yr old dog in on Memorial Day weekend - which I was sure going to be busy after calling around other Vet Urgent Cares that had 3+ hr waiting times (which required physically being there for that time). I stopped in on my way to another location actually, thinking "why not", and they actually scheduled an appointment where I was able to leave and come back (No spending all day in the waiting room!). When I came back and they moved us into our exam room, I really appreciated that they didn't shut the door behind us while waiting for the nurse or doc, they left it open. This was nice for my dog to peep her head out and watch people come and go, and not feel isolated. The issue with my dog ended up being super common and after all of 3 minutes with her they decided it wasn't even worth charging me for the visit - that also just showed me the goodness of their hearts here. Not trying to nickle and dime customers on a holiday weekend. Whether i was charged or not, it was worth the peace of mind knowing it's not what I thought it was. Long story short: these people are kind, truthful, good hearted and boy do I appreciate them being open to take care of our fur babies in times of urgency when they could very well instead spend it with their family. Thank you!

I went to WestVet Urgent Care, completely distraught because my beloved dog had passed away 30 minutes prior. The staff was caring and compassionate. They walked me through the process and assisted me in bringing in the body to the facility. I was glad that they were open on Sunday and appreciated the consolation.

My female Griffon, Jinks, was very sick. I went to the urgent care because my vet could not fit Jinks in on short notice. My experience with this urgent care facility and staff could not have been better. Even though we were a walk-in Jinks was seen within 30 minutes of our arrival, and she received a very thorough exam and evaluation. The veterinarian and vet-tech were kind, compassionate, and caring. They communicated well and were supportive and professional in every way.

A terrible experience! My dog near death in desperate need of help. Of course I can't just bring him in the door. I have to scan a barcode?? Then wait for someone to come outside. My poor dog out of the truck can barely stand. Desperately needs an IV completely dehydrated in near death. Rather than attempting to get my dog inside and get him help, the very unprofessional veterinarian assistant came outside. Asked me a bunch of questions and interrupted me every time I began to answer. I begged her that I just needed to get my dog some help. I think she interrupted me before I got that part finished as well. After going back and forth for a minute she finally told me they didn't administer IV fluids. These people don't listen. They don't care about your story. They jump to conclusions and talk at you. The best thing I did was run from that place as fast as I could and go right down the street to treasure valley veterinary hospital where the service was great and their love and care for my dog went above and beyond. They listened. They understood and they cared.
