How to Save Money at St Francis Pet Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I was traveling through on an extended trip with my dog who suddenly had an eye issue, weeping, swollen eye. Thankfully I dismissed some of the reviews regarding the scheduling and appointment service etc, because I needed help. Yes, there was some call waiting and some call backs, but they were able to fit me in within 24 hours, despite being extremely busy and booked. Thank God, as my little dog's eye was inflamed and almost swollen shut - yikes! Dr Dannielle Olsen provided perhaps the best medical care of any vet I have been to in my many years of pet ownership. She listened carefully to me as I described what had happened, and then she carefully explained the examination plan in detail, first staining the eye, checking for scratches, then numbing and probing for foreign objects, and finally flushing and adding meds. She and her assistant were so careful and kind to my dog, who was in much discomfort. They also included me and my wife in the treatment room to help calm the dog. You don't see that in big city vets, but then again this is cowboy country, and they know how to get things done. Go Idaho!!! This is a wonderful vet who I highly recommend, and will not hesitate to return to when I'm in Ketchum again. Dr Olsen and staff, thank you so much and may God Bless and keep you doing what you obviously love!

Staff ignored basic requests. Went way too far with a pet grooming. Contacted the doctor and he apparently has a good complex. He couldn’t care less. If this clinic ignores basic requests, I can’t imagine what they ignore that’s important.

Karsten has been taking care of our dogs for over 30 years. We went to him when he had a clinic in Santa Barbara. Last summer we had to put down one of our dogs and he was so caring, gave us the room to say goodbye and waited until we felt ready. He saved our other dogs life when she got tangled in barbed wire. We can't say enough good things about Karsten and his staff. He truly cares!

I hate to give a review like this but I wasn't sure how else to communicate this to St.Francis. (Click for whole story) I want to first say that we have had no trouble with the actual doctors at this clinic, they are kind and smart with great bedside manner. It was the constant blunders and abrasive communications of the receptionist that caused us to have a very unsuccessful vet experience. First, when my husband called to ask about appointment availability, he was put on hold for 15 minutes. When the woman finally got back to him, she had FORGOTTEN him and the reason he called which made him have to ask again for availability. Because this was a spontaneous visit, we did not have our dog's medical records with us (we live in a very small town far away and are in Ketchum 2-3 times per year) -- when my husband tried to clarify this to the reception lady she was very unhelpful and unclear about what they knew about our dog, or what they needed from us/other vets before our visit. He was on the phone with her for another 15 minutes, he tried to clarify some things about our dog's vaccines and the lady just said "the doctor will know when she sees [our dog]" Days later, we go to our appointment and the same receptionist couldn't find our dog in the system (despite us having visited before) at first, we chalked this up to a last name error (my husband and I have different last names) -- eventually we found ME in the system (my name was also misspelled) BUT even though they had record of my dog, this woman claims there was no record of my dog's ACTUAL visit??? I'm not sure how this is even possible. THEN this woman asks us "What is the purpose of your appointment?" and we try to explain the checkup and asking about any additional vaccines our dog might be due for and this lady just responds, as if annoyed by our stupidity, that "you need to have her records for us to know that" which my husband had ASKED FOR CLARITY ABOUT over the phone with this woman. So, we give her our other vet's contact info and again, annoyed with us, she says "I'll need to call them, so this will take a few days, so you'll need to reschedule." So, we did not get to interface with the lovely doctor. We bought some flea + tick meds and promptly left. I'm not sure what the expectations are at this establishment, but since so many Ketchum folks are in-and-out of town, I would have assumed they were used to this sort of scenario. Anyway, we hope to visit again someday but I think we will try elsewhere for a while.

Unbelievable staff, always there to help. Karsten is incredibly generous with his time and his facility. They have been there for me through several different pets and their injuries and more.
