How to Save Money at Habitat Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I first started bringing my 13 year old Border Collie to Habitat to see Dr. Wolverton (chiropractor) as sort of a last ditch effort to help her with urinary continence that was no longer responding to medications. At our first visit, I was very impressed with the beautiful facility and very friendly staff. Dr. Wolverton was wonderful and listened to all of my concerns regarding my pup. After the first adjustment, I saw a huge improvement in her incontinence and behavior. She was acting like a puppy again. I now bring both of my senior dogs regularly, and I am so pleased with how well they are doing. For anyone with senior pets, I highly recommend Dr. Wolverton and Habitat. We have since switched to Habitat for all of our veterinary care. I have been so impressed with the care we have received and the incredible staff. They have many veterinarians on staff and it has so far been much easier to get an appointment when emergencies arise. Prices are also very fair.

We recently moved to Boise and took our older pup to Habitat for the first time about a month ago. Our dog has a few chronic issues being an older dog. They retrieved his medical history from our previous vet and I could tell they reviewed it thoroughly prior to his appointment. This meant a lot to us and showed that they cared. He had a growth on his foot that ultimately required surgery and amputation of a toe. We met with Dr. Peters first and she talked through the process in depth and also sent us home with more information so we could talk it over. We scheduled the surgery, but it ended up getting worse in a short period of time. I called and they were able to get him in for surgery with Dr. Tefoya that same day! Everyone from the amazing reception staff to every tech and vet we spoke to were above and beyond my expectations. They get to know your pet, and treat them like their own. On top of everything, their facility is beautiful and their prices are more than fair. I can't say enough wonderful things about Habitat!

Took my pup and best friend in for a treatment that required anesthesia this week. Everyone at Habitat seemed to take a direct interest in his well being. The vet, Stephanie Peters, talked to me before and after the treatment and told me *everything* I could expect. Great work by a great team. Thank you all veery much

6/5 STARS 🌟 This has been our 3rd time here to have our birds seen. We are OVER THE MOON for this place! First two visits were emergencies and they got us in so quickly even though they book fast. Once you walk in you feel like you're at a spa. Very nice compared to other places that have a "sick animal" feel. The staff is great from receptionist, techs and the vets. We searched all over Boise, Meridian and Nampa for a bird vet and they have been outstanding. Care is great for our birds since not a lot of places will take birds. They handle them well without much stress. They have 3 vets that can do bird care which is beyond exciting here in Boise. Their prices are great and they have an in house lab. This by far is our #1 choice for our bird vet!

Habitat is the vet to see. The whole staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We have had the pleasure to see several different doctors and every single one has made us feel welcomed. Duke was just recently neutered and Dr. Baker made us feel great about our decision. Great Place!
