How to Save Money at Bench Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I love this place and how they treat my animals which is why I'm leaving 5 stars. I have literally never had a problem with them for the years and years my mom and I have came here. Today was my first time ever running into an issue. My dog has consistent hematomas and she had a check in. I called and asked if they had time to squeeze in my kitten because she had blood in her stool and the receptionist told me they can fit her in. I made it pretty clear that if they didn't have the time today they can schedule me for a later time and the receptionist tells me once again that it's fine. I could tell something was off by her tone of voice and that's why I wanted to make it clear to her that it's okay if they can't fit in my kitten today. I get to the vet and the doctor that always works with my dog comes out and starts a short conversation or lecture about how they're short staffed and I can't expect them to just fit in my animal. I understand being short staffed, I work for my moms company and we're short staffed. I'm in disbelief the way the situation was handled considering the fact that I was totally okay if they couldn't fit in my kitten. I'm definitely not impressed and I thought at this point they could be honest and say "no we can't fit in your kitten" because I go to the vet once a week for my dog. (I see the whole team there all the time). Instead the situation was twisted to make me look like a bad customer. I'm still very confused, it was the cherry on top of a bad day. I wish I could leave a lower review but they have been great with my animals and that's what I care about the most.

I am very happy I found the good people at Bench Animal Hospital. They are taking great care of my baby (8 year old Havanese). She just had a dental and she has done so well!, so much better than the last time she needed one and we took her to our old vet in Portland.

I had the most profoundly unhelpful interaction I've ever had with administrative staff of a clinic. The individual who answered when I called was rude and cut me short as I was trying to explain what help we were asking for (get a prescription for a cat food that is used for managing a condition that Dr. Andrews has seen our cat for). The staff told us that our cat has not been seen by the vet for this condition (untrue) and was also told that they couldn't help us because they don't carry food (not what we were looking for and we tried to explain but she hung up on us). I had called a few minutes before and been placed on hold and then hung up on. She had said that they are extremely busy and I respect that, particularly for a veterinary clinic on a Saturday. However, I was surprised by how little the individual listened and then proceeded to talk over me. Our previous interactions with this vet clinic have been fine and we were impressed by the kind demeanor of Dr. Andrews as well as the reasonable cost. However, this interaction was disappointing enough that we won't utilize their services any more.

We have tried multiple vet offices over the years and this one finally feels like the right fit! I’m so grateful my friend Meredith recommended it to us. While in other offices it seemed like they barely remembered us when we came in, this place makes us feel like family and they really do care about our pups!
