How to Save Money at Animal Medical Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I don’t even know where to start with this place. They have been so gracious to us and our pups. We had to put one of our girls down on Monday and on Tuesday one of our other dogs was unable to use her back legs suddenly. They got us in the same day and Dr. Pearson spent a lot of time with us and our shepherd to figure out what is going on. She ended up having an emergency surgery today and they stayed so incredibly late to make sure she was okay and taken care of. I know people have their own families, pets and lives to take care of and it meant a lot knowing they were giving up their personal time to tend to my family. My boyfriend has been taking his dogs to Dr. Gillis for years and we are so thankful for this clinic and their staff. I have spent a lot of time there this week and cried through most of it but every single person we have worked with and talked to there has been so understanding, supportive and PATIENT with me and all of my emotions. I’m so grateful for them and their willingness to love our girls as much as we do. Thank you isn’t really enough.

The office manager is a very rude person. I had an issue with a prescription being denied after my dog had been on it for months because “one of my two dogs was only listed under my wife’s name. The prescription was in my name and had been charged monthly on my credit card for 6 months. I was notified by email from the online pharmacy that this office manager denied it. She denied or stopped my prescription because it’s my wife’s dog ( I bought her a puppy for her birthday) and I can’t have a prescription in my name only my wife’s! I called four times over two days and kept getting the run around by the vet technician. They were supposed to call me back but failed to do so. Finally I got through to the office manager who was very rude and wouldn’t let me talk , she kept trying to talk over me very loudly and then said I should find another vet. It was her error and I was being blamed because technically I can’t have a prescription for my “wife’s dog.” A very rude and unprofessional office manager that won’t accept her own mistake. Why can’t she pick up the phone and call us to straighten it out instead of denying the medication? The entire explanation she gave made no sense and she knew it and her inability to acknowledge her mistake was very disappointing because I liked the veterinarian but I refuse the go back because of this high and mighty office manager. I do not recommend this place.

My dog broke his arm, I called amc and they got me in right away. An hour later I had X-rays, a cast on my dog's arm and all the meds I would need. The prices are fair, the service is incredible. I will never take my animals to a different vet.

Dr. Gozenbach is phenomenal. My dog Vinnie, has a lot of anxiety, making vet visits very stressful for the both of us. Every time she sees Vinnie she is gentle, patient and kind. She is very thorough in her practice and listens to my concerns. Also want to give a shout out to the receptionists and vet techs on staff. Vinnie is a rescue and as a result is agressive towards other animals. Every time he needs to be seen, they make sure the lobby is clear and communicate with me when he can come through the side door and into an exam room. I cannot express how much I appreciate these extra precautions and how much safer it makes me feel. From the bottom of my heart (and maybe Vinnie’s after he gets peanut butter) thank you so much Animal Medical Center of Boise!
